Has anyone replaced driveshaft U-joint on E53?
Anyone crazy enough to have done this??
I can't even find what u joint would fit. I find a thread where someone did it on 528i 1997, but nothing on X5. I guess remaufacting companies must be replacing them when rebuilding driveshafts. While driveshaft is out, I'd love to try and replace the U joint, but I'm not sure I'll be able to find the exact same one, if I press the old one out... |
I haven't done it myself, but the reading I've done says the joint that works is a number BMW have used for many years. I also recall finding a U-joint specifically sold for E53 applications on eBay.uk. To retain the joint to the yoke it seems people that have done this were tack welding small steel discs or straps to it. One guy said he actually a coin. I know that's not a ton to go on, but seeing as this forum is so 'quiet' these days I thought I'd try and offer something...I guess most have lost patience with their X5s and sent them to the salvage yard.

I only found this one, I think it's for older models unfortunately

Check the suitable Löbro or Spidan parts on GKN online cataloque.

Looking by model they only show complete assemblies unfortunately.
