Diesel AC Fan

I need to replace my dead AC fan on my 3.0D.

The diesel version comes with a control unit but the petrol variants do not. Does anyone know the reason for this or the function of the control unit?

I have seen on drive2.com that some russians have fitted the petrol version to their diesels successfully and only needed to trim some plastic off the bottom of the shroud to accommodate the intercooler.

The price difference is significant and I would happily get the dremel out if the control unit is superfluous. Thoughts?

Here are the parts:

AFAIK all E53 electric pusher fans are PWM controlled (3 wires) so they have control unit built inside the fan housing.

SirHiss, I'm curious - what makes you think there is a control unit on the diesel aux fan (other than the PWM motor in the central hub)?

After market units can be and state anything. On the upper unit the plug housing seems to have 3 pins installed so it must be PWM controlled. The lower one "with control unit" seems to have all 4 pins installed indicating it's likely 3 stage with that control unit being just pre-resistor pack.

Both units are 3 pin. The picture is just unclear and looks kinda like a pin but it's really just the white background and you're looking through the empty hole in the plug.

I guess I will get the far cheaper petrol version and just trim the plastic then! :D

Have you checked the price as original Range/Land Rover parts? I think someone mentioned just a fan out of Rover part and installing it in the old E53 housing.

Sorry, my question was a bit dumb since I didn't check out the links you posted (I rarely do - no time!) but as Clavurion has said, after-market units are a wildcard. The OE E53 (with M57/M57N) aux. fan has no control box...

It seems some of the after-market unit have a cheaper DC motor so need a PWM control box the modulate the motor speed... Not sure how well it provides diagnostics back to the DDE. :dunno:

I would suggest that the after-market unit might have a limited life-span with a cheaper DC motor but it's not like the OE parts (with the PWM motor assemnly) is long-lived!

Given the cost of the OE part here in NZ (:yikes::yikes::yikes:) I may well look wider than OE if I ever need one too!

That's a good thought! The OE fan unit does dismantle easily... might even be able to do this without removing the bumper (with small enough hands!).

Even the original fan has a PWM control board but it's built inside the fan core.
