Mileage is far less of a factor now. It is the age that is killing these guides. If you are doing the main timing chain guides, you should just do absolutely everything while you're in there, no sense in cutting corners/cost.

Leaky check valve will let the oil drain out of the topside of the block making for noisy "lifters" (actually called followers on over head cam where they push down not up) and chain rattle while the oil pressure builds.

x5Alpine, I think yes age is a big factor I have possible failure there at even relatively low mileage.
Andrew, good point, I did see the check valve mentioned in a few diys and saw it on the parts diagrams so it was already on the list. Thanks for confirming that, will definitely be replaced. |
M62 timing chain guides...do the cam chains also?
I think the check valve can be replaced through the solenoid hole. Need a special thin wall socket to get the solenoid out as the outer sleeve week just spin off you try to wrench it.
