Steel wheels?
My 2001 came with 17" wheels/tires. The wheels are beat up; paint is abraded, curb rashed, etc. Tires are... whatever "Summit" tires are. Never heard of that brand until I bought this thing last May.
Are there any basic-ass steel wheels that will fit this thing? Did BMW ever even offer those? I know earlier Euro base model3/5-ers had them with plastic covers. Probably want to stay with the 17s. tirerack.com usually has steelies as winter packages but not for E53. I don't need winter tires here and I don't want to upsize either. 17s ride nice and handle ok. |
I hear that Chevy wheels have 120x5 on some small trucks. If you find the right offset they should work. I don't think the hub size is the same but if bigger you can use centering rings like putting e70 wheels on e53

Thanks y'all.
Here's a pretty comprehensive list of bolt patterns and hub diameters: https://www.uswheeladapters.com/wp-c...-Guide-1-1.pdf |
These might work. I want that basic-ass truck look.
https://www.visionwheel.com/wheel/11...W60?finishID=9 size: 17X6.50 bolt pattern = 5x120, bore = 72.56 (mm I suppose), offset = 42, "BSM" (don't know what that means) = 5.42" |

Salty B. - you do you...But there are many sets of decent, used alloy E53 17 inch wheels on facebook, craigslist, etc. for short money. Some have decent tires.
Find a guy near you who can straighten them and then run 'em into the ground. |

Came here to say this - there are three or four sets of style 57s on craigslist locally for a song. I bought a second set for winter tires a couple years ago, I overpaid I think $150 with used tires on them. The quality of OEM wheels is so much better than aftermarket and especially cheap steelies too. But I agree -- you do you sir. One thing to keep in mind is steelies usually weigh a lot, which will hurt acceleration compared to factory aluminum wheels. I am actually looking at some style 131s (18") on craiglist locally. I wanted 17" for my winter tires but would like to upsize to the 18s for my summer tires. I agree the comfort is better on 17s, but for towing I'd like the shorter profile and wider contact patch in the summer. |
basic black wheels, no lift, oversized tires...wish my tires weren't almost new
My tires were brand-new-ish 2.5 years ago, with absolutely no wear; since then, I've only driven 1300 miles, so I have no excuse to upgrade tires (and sneak new wheels into the mix).
However, I think I would do as thstone proposed in his 2020 post, where he tried black wheels and 31" tires on his unlifted (at that time) '03 X5: https://xoutpost.com/1192961-post20.html. Probably model #1729414014B I could get some hub centric rings, and that should work on my '01 (assuming that the 5x4.75 bolt circle would be close enough). But, I have a feeling that I'll not get new tires anytime soon (however, I have to get new valve stems, as I have a recurrent problem with leaks, though I've re-cored all stems at least twice). |
