Changing Angel eyes bulb results in a mess of disintegrating wiring
Hi all,
I went to change the angel eyes bulb in my Xenon lights and as soon as I disconnected the wiring I had the insulation literally disintegrate into my hands. I now have exposed wires all over the place which I've temporarily fixed by applying a bit of insulation tape however this needs a proper fix. Is this a common issue? What is the solution for the other side? I have bought a whole lot of headlight upgrades from https://lightwerkz.net/ and new lenses but i'm too bloody scared to go anywhere near the lights after seeing the insulation disintegrate! This is pretty much what I'm planning on doing apart from new angel eyes LED. https://youtu.be/DUxKwmAcq68?si=PkJFKwkExFtISJRf Thanks all! |
I had the same issue on my BMW E92. I used liquid electrical tape to reinsulate the wires. You can find the liquid tape at Home Depot.

Any pics of how it looked after you did it?
To be honest I'm pretty pissed at BMW for using such trash wiring, I mean I can't believe they didn't realise the lights were going to get hot and so needed decent insulation. Sounds like a lot of work! |
I took apart my headlights to upgrade the projectors and replace the faded lenses, and mine were the same way. It honestly wasn't too bad of a job, but you definitely need a few days to finish both headlights - i replaced a lot of the wiring that was internal to the headlight. I also had to re-wrap the optics cables that lead to the angel eyes because the sheath around mine completely crumbled apart.

Yes, I think that is not unheard of. There is actually an interesting story/explanation about that and why the foam in the seats is so crappy, I think on here somewhere.

Quite small current on those wires so even basic insulation tape will do the job. Or vulcanising tape or mentioned liquid tape or take the pins out of the connector and use shrink tube.

Not just a BMW problem - many Euro cars have this issue... And then there's rats... https://www.theglobeandmail.com/glob...ticle28848304/ |

X5 made in USA though so European mandate wouldn't apply lol |

It still get exported to back to the motherland Europe...so it does apply, unfortunately. |
Yup, my headlight wiring is toast. Cracks everywhere. I make sure the covers are on securely. Luckily, I have another set as replacements. I plan to fix up the wiring before installing them. No replacement harness exists.
