Welcome to Finland if you think your prices are high. This in Euro/litre.

It also says this, at least for the 4.8is:

The knock control provides:

- Protection against knocking damage also under unfavourable conditions
- High efficiency due to optimised use of the fuel quality and consideration of the relevant engine status
- Logistics advantages with regard to fuel availability
- Lower consumption and higher torque over the entire upper load range (corresponding to the fuel quality used).

So, by my understanding, and Andrew's experience, consumption or performance could be affected. :dunno:

This is an age old discussion regarding premium recommended vehicles. My thoughts, I wouldn't personally run less than recommended... but to each their own. The vehicle isn't going to blow up or anything.

That's the same language it uses in the 3.0 TIS.

Basically, it's perfectly fine to run on regular, but it might possibly make a little more power with premium because it doesn't pull as much timing.

With the m54 I ran mid grade as Ann experiment and def got lower mpg. No appreciable drop in power that you could tell without a stop watch. I think the fill door says 91 recommended. I think the drop in mog for me almost exactly countered the lower price.

I'm surprised how many people get away with 87 but I know that a large number of people use premium in cars that don't even call for it. I would want to watch my knock sensor feedback to tell if it's really causing much difference before I'd bother.

The 50i had a lower # octane printed on the filter door. Maybe 89 vs. 91. I was a little surprised to see that.

It is definitely interesting going from my e39 M5 owners group to the E53 Owners group. In the M5 group, they don't bat an eye spending $19,000 on an engine rebuild from Partee while here people are debating about trying to save pennies on fuel. I guess the price point of these X5's attracts such.

Not really that interesting. Or that surprising. PPL in higher tax brackets tend to be much more free with their disposable income... you know, because they have a lot of it. Also allows some of them to feel all high and mighty about sh*tting on "lesser than" owners.

How many M5 owners in the group are alcohol blown with multiple fuel pumps? :D

haha I get your point, I just don't get why you would treat a nice E53 any different to the E39 M5. I put the same amount of resources and care into my E53 that I do my M5. My 4.6is just got a complete paint job (famous estoril blue paint peeling) which far exceeded the value of the car.

So far I've only run 93 in the E53 M54. I've always run 93 in my F30 N55 since new, but it's turbocharged and I wind the piss out of it. Maybe I'm wasting money on the E53 but the end difference isn't that much.
