What is the MAF reading when it's plugged in? Reading in grams/sec. It should be close to engine size at operating temperature. The sensor could be bad. Is it an OEM old one? If it's very old, replace it or borrow one to try out. The orange glue looks like sensor "coating". I have not look at one closely but it should be normal unless it looks burned.

I have had this car for 8 years and 83K miles and never changed them (they are at least 100K miles or could be original...who knows ! the fuel filter that I just change was made in 2003 !!! )

I will barrow a MAF sensor to see if it will fix it,
Btw, when MAF is not plugged in I get these Two errors, are they both normal for MAF disconnected?

1 - 08 Signal, Air-mass Flow Sensor (I expected this one)
2- CC plausibility idle speed (leakage air) P0505 - **** the Second one looks scary ***

What measurement should I look at for Gram/sec ? in the ECM data stream there are these numbers when MAF plugged in:

P0505 is a code I've never seen. I'll deferrer to our local experts here. However, I would remove and clean both the air idle valve and throttle body. The air idle valve should clack when turned over back and forth. Brake cleaner or carb cleaner work great on it. The TB should only be cleaned with specific throttle body cleaner.

For front O2 readings, you need a graph to see its operation. Max voltage should be 0.9V to 0.2V and oscillating up and down. For rear O2 readings, voltage should be steady for each idle RPM. The last Ford Escape I looked over for a friend had 0.7 volts at idle. I would up up 0.8 at 1500 RPMs. As long as voltage was steady, the engine is running great.

I learned the MAF sensor trick from here. When unplugged, the DME uses a default fuel map. The fuel map should be ideal conditions for it to run properly. Sounds like you need a new MAF sensor to fix some issues.

That loose hose is front diff ventilation. That's how it should be.

I ordered a smoke machine and I am waiting on the delivery but guess what, I think I actually found the source of the problem, before the smoke machine arrive in mail.

would you please me what is the part name or number for this Lower Boot? it is cracked right where it connects with the upper boot at the clamp

and is there any Video I can follow to change it myself?

is it possible that I just Patch the boot instead of replacing it? I saw a video that they used super glue and then black siliocone to patch rubber boots.
I am under time pressure to pass the SMOG, would that be a temproary good solution till I order the parts ?

Looks like
13-54-1-440-102 tube elbow, air intake boot
I needed that part on my 2001 3.0i. It was torn, giving me P0171 and P0174 codes (lean in banks 1 and 2).
Very cheap part.
Anything you can do to reduce the leak while waiting to get the part should help.

BTW, on the fuel filter, those are pretty huge, and a really long service life is not a big surprise.

Interesting you had same issue how many miles ur had on it when it happened? Mine is 283k and did you do it yourself? I seen some videos of e46 for changing it but no for e53. Did you or them have to remove cabin filter or the disa

Ok my smoke test machine arrived and i did a smoke test
I did it with cold engine once the smoke came under left side

Can anyone plz help me identify where this leak is ? Is that ccv ? I am gonna upload videos soon
The second time it came from the thing bellow the disa valve, is that throttle body?

And in both cases it stopped finally.

I took the airbox out, and upper boot here is a better view of it, it’s something bellow the disa but i dont know what it is called or if i need to replace it or what
