Headlight lens and adhesive
Hello, I got a 2006 e53 with the adaptive xenon headlights, the lens are stained on the inside and I been looking to replace them so far I settled on these from ebay.
As far as I knew since these are not the same as the ones from 1999-2004 that you could heat up the glue and remove the lens, it seems I need to dremel these out and I'm wondering what would be good adhesive to bond the new lens in. |
I used butyl rope on mine, but it still leaked water afterwards. Applied a thick bead of RTV but that did not help. Ended up replacing the whole thing with an eBay part.

I used 3/4" butyl on mine and I live in a humid environment. No issues since I swapped lenses a year and a half ago: no leaks or fogging. Just need to make sure everything is seated properly and the gap between the start and end of the butyl is pinched together, then heat the butyl evenly with a heat gun before inserting the lens.

4+ years on the E53. No issues. The beauty of butyl is that it can be re-heated and you can actually remove the lens if you need to make any repairs or want to do some mods internally to the headlight. If you reseal with adhesive or similar to what the factory used (windshield style adhesive) you are SOL. |
