2006 X5 4.4 possible purchase
 

Hello folks,
Looking at an 06 4.4i, 122 original km. I cannot see maintenance from the carproof (dealers in Ontario Canada use Carproof). What is the approximate mileage valley pan gasket and timing chain guides should be done? This would be my 1st X5, I have a 2014 ML350 diesel, so I'm comfortable with paying for maintenance!

The X is mint, from what I can see!

Timing chain guides fail when chain tensioner is not replaced often enough. I've seen m62 go 250,000 mi original guides.

N62 is not as bad and if you change tensioners x2 at 100,000 miles and every 50,000 after that you prob never have to change the guides.

I think 4.4 went to n62 ≈ 2004 so the big ticket maintenance will be valve stem seals. They seem to fail between 80-120,000 miles. If you are decent DIY you can do that yourself and I'd change the seals on the valley pan pipes at the same time.

That's a very young motor I wouldn't sending guess buying as long as it years ok including looking at the oil for specks.

You are correct. The N62 arrived with XDrive with the LCI in 2004. FWIW, I think age may also be a factor on the valve stem seals. We had to do our '04 4.4 N62 last Fall at less than 60k miles. That one stung a little. My '04 4.8 N62 waited until right at 100k around 2017 or so.

I'm at 189k now, and she does get thirsty for oil, but no smoke at idle. I would guess about a quart refill is needed every 1,200 miles depending on driving style or if I have anything in tow.

Whenever I need more oil, I just stop into the drive through at the service bay and they top it off. :-) I did the annual oil change thing a few years ago. I change it once and then let them change it on the annual schedule or the lights, whichever is 1st.

Valve stem seals, coolant transfer pipe and alternator bracket gasket are the N62 maintenance jobs you need to be concerned about, not chain guides.

At 122km I would say they are going to be due soon if not now. It would have to be a good deal for me to buy one without knowing these jobs had been done. At least the valve seals. Others can be DIY if handy. Coolant pipe is the easiest of the 3, valve seals definitely the hardest.

I wouldn't not buy due to vss which are likely not done at that low mileage but factor in the job into your price consideration.

What's the cost of VSS down south? I'm curious! I just paid $2200 CAD for oil cooler seals and oil change for my ML.

We did valley pan with new AGA water pipe and seals all at the same time. It was around $6k IIRC.
