Ignition turns off at low speed
 

Not sure if anyone has ever experienced this, I haven't had luck searching.

Just happened again to my wife yesterday. In a parking lot at low speed, she turns to go down an aisle and the engine turns off and vehicle starts coasting.

Happened at least twice in the past (several years ago). Turns to go into a parking stall and engine turns off.

My son had the car turn off on the freeway in stop and go traffic driving to Lake Tahoe 3 years ago. Happened twice and ran fine after that.


In all cases, car starts right up again.


I replaced the ABS module a couple years ago and that seems to have eliminated emission codes that had been reoccurring. No codes have shown up since then and no codes from yesterday.

Maybe a problem with the ignition module on the steering column? Doesn't explain turning off on the freeway though.

Take the belt off and check accessories for excess turning resistance. Check the power steering pulley.

It's the exact symptom of faulty intake cam position sensor. Both of our M54 did exactly this at about 130,000 miles and 14 years.

The main times they would stall: pulling into 90° parking spaces or pulling forward from a stop in a left turn lane when a light turns green but waiting for oncoming traffic.

On my first one I spent over an hour fishing three wire under the intake on the second I just routed the wire over the intake in 5 seconds flat.

Do not use knock off sensors! Get an OEM sensor or you'll be plagued with mystery problems! CPS very rarely ever causes code related to cps.

Only one of our m54 had an exhaust CPS fail and that was years after the intake so I would suspect intake first.

My e53 had ses/mil lit when I test drove at auction. Self cleared by delivery & when it came back the randomly unrelated code led me to xoutpost and miraculously somebody had the same random unrelated code but identical symptoms. New intake CPS OEM bought from Amazon for about $90 was my first BMW repair.

I had an exhaust CPS starting to give me intermittent faults, so I looked at FCP Euro $$$ and Amazon $ pricing, and decided to take a chance on a Vemo sensor, that was around $23 at the time. https://xoutpost.com/1222619-post4.html

As you can see from the above link, it was made in Germany by Vaico (whose parts I'd known of from working on cars at my master-mechanic, retired pro, friend's home shop...where we'd build race cars, and fix friend & family's vehicles). At $23, it was certainly worth taking a chance (though, if I was going to drive 1500 miles from home, maybe I'd have gone with an OEM part).

As-is, I've driven the X with the Vemo CPS for over 1000 miles, mainly on short jaunts of 10 miles or thereabouts, and thru uncounted start/stop cycles while fiddling around at home. It hasn't missed a beat!

I would come to the same conclusion on vemo / vaico for CPS.

Car will still run when it starts to fail and it it very easy to change.
