Eccentric Shaft Sensor

Hi all, i have been reading about the eccentric shaft sensor of late and I am thinking this may be a cause of an issue. I have a 2005 X5 E53 4.4i sport v8 engine. I am asking because I am getting the check engine light and the “DME Fuel mixture adaptation, idling, per time unit” 29E7/present code error after I drill down from the Engine-DDE Diesal Electronics DDE3.0 Fault code. While scanning the web I found one user got rid of the codes by smoke detection and found the eccentric shaft sensor seal was leaking. I assume this sensor is at the rear of my engine and hard to get to?

cheers

The eccentric shaft seal is on the top of the valve cover, at the rear. You can pop off the vanity cover and the eccentric shaft seal is the gold looking diamond shaped piece.

Confused what engine you have though - you say it's a 04 4.4 which would be N62, but then say you found that code "after I drill down from the Engine-DDE Diesal Electronics DDE3.0"
The N62 uses an ME9.2 DME. Why are you looking at diesel stuff?

I would just get it smoke tested, and go from there. If there's a leak somewhere it'll be obvious. You can't assume that just because someone else's vacuum leak was from there, that yours will be too. You need to properly diagnose the problem first.

Ok, that is not so bad. Thanks. You are correct in that it is a N62. The Foxwell tool just has that wording in its auto scan listing. Will consider it getting smoke tested but before I do that I have a water pump coolant leak requiring a new water pump. Aparently some seals behind the water pump.

I just recently had a power steering hose and a leaking oil thermostat replaced. The thermostat was pouring oil out from the high pressure side. What a mess on the ground I had to deal with. I got that fixed and getting the water pump changed in the next day or so. The water pump issue might also be throwing the check engine light. Will keep you posted.
