where is the oil leak??
I have a serious oil leak, leaving a trail of oil and having to at a couple qts in 20mi!!!
But where is is coming from? I see a slight leak on one of the front timing covers, but its no where near that much. I thought it might be the Rear Main seal, but again, doesnt look that wet. Looking upward from the bell housing I could trace a stream of fresh oil going up to the top of the bellhousing. slightly to the right side (passenger) But I just changed the Valve cover gasket on that side. cant fully see back there but I could feel fresh fluid from the backside of the intake manifold somewhere. What is back there that could literally be pumping oil out??? 2006 4.8is |
There is nothing that should be leaking oil onto the intake manifold. There is no oil supply into the intake or above it.
When you did the valve cover gaskets did you place RTV at the required locations? Did you check the alternator bracket gasket? |

Im not 100% familiar with this engine, more familiar with the M62, not sure where the alt bracket gasket it...could it leak that much? I was starting to thing the Oil drain wasn't fully tightened (but its good) |

The area you outlined does not see any oil, above it or in that area. There is no oil flowing into the intake manifold. The upside down U shaped piece in that area, just below the intake at rear of block, is a coolant passage. The nearest potential oil leak to the area you outlined is the valve covers.
However valve covers will not be a large leak. The alternator bracket gasket sees very high pressure oil, this is where they supply oil coolers on other N62 models with those equipped. Without the oil cooler the oil flows into a channel in the alternator bracket and straight back to the engine. This oil is sealed with a rubber gasket and is a common source of leaks. Locate the alternator and then look at the piece it bolts to. If the leak is from the alternator bracket gasket the oil will be between this piece (the alternator bracket) and the block. |

Ok, I read up on the alternator Gasket, However, there is still a stream of fresh oil coming from somewhere on the upper half of the bellhousing area some how
