Super Start battery [emoji367]
 

Anyone familiar with the auto battery name "Super Start extreme"? I think sold by O'REILLY'S auto parts store...it's a group#49 battery.

I've used a few Super Start batteries (though not the Extreme or group 49 versions) from O'REILLY'S over the years, and all seem to have lasted for a long time. I think I still have one in my wife's '98 GMC, that's around 7 years old (I keep all vehicles on charger/maintainers year-round, adding to battery longevity).

I formerly bought all my batteries from O'REILLY'S or AutoZone, but since about 2000, I've bought them from Walmart or Sam's Club, due to price and convenience (and their batteries have proved to be as good or better than from the former sources). The battery in the GMC is the exception, because I needed a battery with both side and top posts, on a Sunday morning, to install on the GMC which was 100 miles away, on a ranch my wife was visiting at the time. Only O'REILLY'S had one in stock.

Yeah, for years my auto battery purchase has been from Sam's. About 5 years ago in FL visiting my wife's mother and I was just kicking it around while they were catching up....i visited Walmart they were selling an AGM battery (MAX something or other) at a third of the regular price (someone returned it).
Running that battery to this day with no starting problems...may have re- conditioned it a couple of times.
The Sam's battery is good! Sam's stands behind that Duracell product line, it's a little known service but Sam's will make a house visit to install the battery at no additional charge. I ve never taken advantage of the service. Three years ago the Duracell it went flaky on me and Sams replaced it for me at a decent pro-rated price...i found it acceptable. But it's now 3 years later and
( I believe) the cause of my car's periodic hard starts. Duracell is currently on the charger.
I've installed the O'Reilly Super Start in the Duracells place. Found the Super Start in a boneyard BMW...6 months old off the store's shelf. Now closely monitoring it's proformance especially seeing temperatures are dipping greatly around here.
Of course I might just need to replace the alternator which is at 230k miles...

I have one in the X5. 3 year warranty which is pretty good. If anyone knows of a longer warranty please post.

The other thing to consider is how long it's been sitting on the shelf. Certain stores have batteries but don't move a lot of them so you're buying an older one.

All batteries seem to have gone to 3 year warranties. Interstate batteries can be prorated to six years on some. Interstate batteries does offer one with a 4 year warranty. All my vehicles use Interstate except the X5. It has a Duracell. I'll probably go Interstate on the next one.

If in Europe get a Banner (same as OEM). If you order from the linked seller take delivery via www.mailboxde.com if you are outside Germany (German VAT, no delivery charge to courier and cheaper delivery from the courier compared to seller).

I'm pretty much set in the category of battery for the "X" for this winter...

But out of curiosity I'm reading that we could be mis lead in focusing solely on CCA=Cold Cranking Amps.

The lead-acid Group 49 H8 has a reserve capacity of 185 minutes, better than the 120 minutes of an H7, or the 140 minutes of a Group 94R (possible fit). In fact, the lead-acid Group 49 H8 I bought has a higher reserve capacity than the Duracell Group 49 H8 AGM (only 140 minuted RC)! For $60 less, to boot. Same 36 month warranty, too.

I know that AGM's (or Lithium) batteries are favored now, but I've had better luck with conventional batteries over 59 years (bought my first battery in 1965, for my '56 Chevy). Unless you let them freeze (unused & unattended over a winter...twice on our old travel trailer), they have lasted as long as the one AGM battery I still have (on my 4x8 camping trailer, since '12), and much longer than the two GEL racing batteries I used in my old drag car. I've never tried a Lithium battery, nor do I want to chance my X self-igniting, if one was installed (look at all the EV fires that have been reported).

Reserve capacity might be needed more in colder climes, especially if your car doesn't start easily, but my M54 does start easily, and it doesn't get cold here for long, and additionally, I always have a battery charger/maintainer hooked-up, as well.

Actually, the reserve capacity is 185 minutes, same as mine. This battery looks to be an identical match for the Duracell I bought at Sam's Club. Both are made by East Penn. Mine cost $140 and yours cost $230. That's why I quit getting most of my batteries from O'Reilly's & AutoZone (the same battery is sold there, too, under the DuraLast brand).
