M54 New Engine Mounts at 219k WOW
 

Car had decent vibration at idle when in drive. Less when idle in park. Replace both engine mounts and wow. What an amazing difference. So happy. 219k and engine still very strong. Now, no more shakes!

Oh yeah, it’s like night and day difference. I replaced mine at 204k and kicked myself for not doing it sooner. Enjoy!

no prior experience with BMW motor mounts; a test for the mounts?
 

My M54 is nearing 213k miles, and seems relatively smooth, but I've nothing to compare it to. It's my first BMW, and I never even sat in another, before, so I'm comparing apples to oranges if I judge its' smoothness vs my other vehicles (two General Motors V8's, an Ecotec four, and a 56k mile Lexus V6, all of which run smoothly).

The M54 only shows any vibration at all, when I first turn on the A/C compressor (mostly sounds/feels like a plastic panel vibration humming in the interior?), but it smoothes out rapidly and never reappears.

I have no idea if or when the two previous owners might've renewed the motor mounts, but I do know what a bad motor mount feels like, from experience on many other cars/trucks...just not on a BMW X5, so, is there a test to see if mine are still good?

Hey Meestahbig - which brand engine mounts did you use? I am hearing Corteco mounts are made in China and are of dubious quality.

Yes, I was going to ask that same question. I think people have had poor results with a lot of the aftermarket ones. I can't see changing mine anymore at 475k km but you never know! ;)

Yes, went with Corteco, which is what my mechanic said to use and was able to get. I think they will last me a long which if not as long as OEM. As for test. Car idling in drive has the shakes in the steering wheel, door panels, etc, but when I would start driving it would smooth out. That was the sign it was the engine mounts. Other vibrations in just steering wheel or under other driving and braking condition mean other things. Can't wait to get my first longer drive in tomorrow.

If the engine mounts are really bad, the engine is pretty easy to shake by hand. The driver side mount on my E36 was completely shot, I could put my mitt on the bracket and rock the entire engine up and down. The hydraulic fluid was everywhere. This was discovered shortly after buying the car, a few days after the fan contacted the shroud and exploded everywhere, destroying the radiator, etc.

If your car has a clutch fan, check engine mounts once in a while, so the fan isn't moving around breaking everything. I would never get rid of the clutch fan.

I did the OE mounts by corteco on the X5 and the E36. Lifetime replacement. I'm not sure in what part of the world they are made. But I'm sure they will outlast the oil pan gasket and the front differential o-rings. It's more of a while you're in there for the oil pan I think.

According to FCP Euro the Corteco engine mounts for the E53 X5 3.0 are still made in Germany.

They are also the same price as Genuine BMW from FCP Euro

I agree. New motor mounts fixed shaking in gear on mine. Power output felt better too.
