MAF gasket ring question
 

Hi all,
Got a question about this plastic/rubber piece(13717503137) that is at MAF-Intake Boot connection. Does anyone know HOW and WHERE, specifically, this piece is utilized? I removed my MAF to clean it and that gasket was hanging out, loose, just inside the Intake Boot. It doesn’t seem to stretch over outer end of MAF, and wouldn’t seem that it would go there, testing fit. Any ideas? I’ve looked all over net, and not one mention. It IS listed on real oem, on schematic. Thanks for any help.

If I'm reading correctly...
The ring is housed at the exit point of the air box which houses the air filter.

Per ReaOEM, That gasket DOES sit between the intake boot and the MAF... I can't easily post a picture of it.

I may also be missing this part... In my E53 3.0, I have the plastic intake boot connecting with the plastic MAF flange...hard plastic on hard plastic with a large hose clamp around the intake boot holding it.....and it occasionally slips off.

Is it really a "plastic/rubber piece"? It's been awhile since I looked, but I do have the HARD plastic ring 13717503137 (#3 in the RealOEM pic), and the HARD plastic ring 13541438760 (#7), but I'm not sure about the 13711440173 "Gasket Ring" (#6). If it's missing, that might be a part of my lean fuel trims, though many smoke tests, and carb cleaner tests (actually aimed at that same spot), have failed to show a vacuum leak. I've used plastic film and/or wide silicon tape to wrap all points of connection, with no different results.

Just make sure your clamps are tight, and the hoses (and MAF housing) are aligned and fully inserted.

Yes, it IS part #3 in the realoem diagram there. When I loosened hose clamp and removed my MAF from resonator(part #4), that “gasket ring” was just sitting IN the resonator, just past the end of MAF lip, and right before the curve of res pipe. When I attempted to put it all back together, I was stumped at how and where it goes within the design fitment. It seems too small to “stretch” over MAF collar, and doesn’t seem like that all would even FIT within the collar of the resonator it connects to, if I could get it over collar of MAF. I have a pic of where it was sitting after MAF removal, so I’ll try to figure out how to post it.

Pic…….that’s EXACTLY how I found it, upon removal of MAF.
See how the ring is INSIDE the resonator pipe, right before the bend!

I managed to get the stretchy plastic “ring” over the edge of the MAF, but there is NO WAY it is gonna slip in and fit in the resonator pipe, where it goes. It is loose, if installed where I found it(INSIDE resonator pipe) upon MAF removal. I mean, this is wacky bad engineering, if that is where it’s SUPPOSED to go :rolleyes:

It goes right were the diagram shows. Install onto the Maf first.

Tried every which way to install MAF, with gasket ring on it, into rubber boot w/resonator……Even tried to lightly grease the ring AND boot collar it inserts into. Wasn’t about to stress the boot collar and crack a $400 piece of plastic(I’m sure BMW would love that ��). Put 3 wraps of black electrical tape on outer collar of MAF, and an 1/8” thick rubber band at back of MAF collar(to aid sealing up connection), then worked it in to boot gently and tightened down clamp real snug. VOILA, no more SES light or P0171/4 codes!
If you look at the INSIDE collar of the rubber boot(where MAF goes in), you can see how BMW sloped it wide, as it goes in, past the initial lip(RIDICULOUS)!
