Registering the battery

So I had the dealer replaced a battery back in 2018. The battery just died recently May 2025. I remember they said they had to pair the battery to the vehicle. I read that with our model, the battery does not need to be paired to the car. Just install and go.

Is it really a thing where you can pair the battery to the X5? Could that be the reason this battery lasted to long?

the battery was a Bosch AGM battery

Only E seventy and newer.

Those new techs don't know $4it. I took mine to a dealer once. They had never seen an E53. It was a new dealership at the time.

old school, and resisting unnecessary modern "changes for the better"

The days are coming soon, when new mechanics will have never seen dipsticks or manual transmissions, either. A carburetor will seem like something from the Dark Ages, and points ignitions (and tach-dwell meters to use when setting them) will be like the Antikythera mechanism, in their eyes.

So... they will be just like me when I'm faced with fixing a wagon wheel...?

It already happened. I took my 83 C10 to a performance tune up shop years ago. Back in the late '90s. I put in a performance crate motor. I asked them to tune the carb. It ran so bad I learned to tune a carb with a vacuum gauge. Runs like a champ down the street. Idle shakes the neighbor's walls. Dang, I may drive it out of the garage and wake up the entire neighbor hood early this week. :wow:

Not having a transmission dipstick is driving me nuts. I'll get my first crack at checking the E53 fluid level this week. :yikes:

Mine had, but when the parts guy went out with me to pair the new key, he had no idea any were ever made with a manual…
