If your BMW is doing the driving for you, is it really the ultimate driving machine?
 

As stated above. I've been reading the r/BMWX5 sub-Reddit https://www.reddit.com/r/BMWX5, and more than one person raves about the how the DAPP option makes the BMW so much better, a Game-changer.

That's ridiculous IMHO. You might as well take off the steering wheel, or recline and sleep in the seat of a self-drive EV (both blasphemy to me, ICE-ICE baby!).

I love the stiff steering on my X5, and if the truck wasn't so heavy, and my arms so old, I might prefer full manual steering , like I had on most of my vehicles for the first 30 years I was driving.

I actually prefer no media playing while driving, and just love the sound of the engine, exhaust, and tire noise, and the feel of the road thru the steering wheel.

Call me old school, which I am, but some new-fangled innovations and luxury accessories would remove my joy behind the wheel.

Although I do recognise that not everyone is like us - and some folk actually need such systems in order to avoid being a life-threatening hazard on the road. :rolleyes:

And... it's worth noting that while we nearly manage (as a species) to deal with the two-dimensional aspect of road transport, once the third dimension of altitude comes into play (hover-cars, baby!) - we need this shit! :yikes:

I enjoy driving my V8. The feel and sound doesn't ot compare to newer vehicles. My old X5 feels heavy and tank like even compared to our 2016 land rover discovery 4 which twists and rattles on its chassis.
I've driven many newer cars and yes they have lighter steering, more up to date entertainment systems etc but for me I like being old school.
Not only that - rarely seeing another E53 as I drive about is a bonus.

I have no problems driving my 21 year old e83.

The fact that she is still on the road and is surviving
(no, flourishing) is a testimony to the manufacturer, those who are mindful of the BMW myth of poor reliability and me for my up keep. It's not fully stellar...but from time to time on the roadway I'll discover a driver hovering behind me in my blind spot checking her out. She looks good now and even better as the years go by...I like that aspect !
But a casual admirer can't fully appreciate it on just first glance.
One would have to have first hand and experience to fully appreciate a 21 year old e83 on the road today functioning just as well as today's cars...
Day time running lights, intermittent wipers, cruz control, power roof, compass, dimming rearview mirror and not to mention steptronic.

Most importantly...I'm satisfied!

I dont usually hear my car because I'm either blasting music or the giant side mirrors are creating more drag than a cow, but whenever I do hear the V8 it reminds me all the trouble I went through fixing up the car was worth it.

P.S. I've tried closing the mirrors while driving and I can say it does not close which is a nice safety feature from BMW.
