Camshaft position sensor question

I've been getting a code on the X5 stating inlet camshaft control bank 2.. 022 on my code reader.
Anyway, yesterday I thought I'd whip out the vanos solenoids to give them a clean out and swap out the timing chain tensioner too (4.4).
I noticed that the cam sensor on the left side - looking at the engine from the front, was an aftermarket item with no brand or part number. The right side sensor is original BMW.
Curiosity got the better of me so I got my Fluke out to check the resistance on the pins of the sensors.
The BMW one had a reading of 1.463 but the aftermarket one was circa . 650
One would expect the two to be the same but I don't know what the figures should be.
Does the aftermarket sensor have a duff reading and is on its way out?
The solenoids were tested and worked OK.
Getting the new chain tensioner in was another story..
Looking from outside the car at the engine what side is bank 1?

Only refer to left and right from the cars direction. Port is left right is starboard.

Bank one is starboard bank two is port.

Never use non oem cps. I would rather use 10 yr old oe than new china part

No need to use terms like port and starboard. Most of the public don't know these terms.
R is R and L is L in Bmw catalog book, and viewed from the cockpit.

In healthcare, the nurse or doctor facing the patient refers to the patient "R arm" as the real right arm.

So bank 2 is on the right as seen from the driver seat..

Yeah I'd love to agree with you but I've seen BMW tech manuals with right and left BACKWARDS!

(Referring to your left/right facing the car)! It's asinine to refer to the mechanic's left side when they mean the right or starboard side of the car.

So yes you are 100% correct there is only one right and one left side of car while the "driver's side" which is a moronic reference with 1/4 of the people on xoutpost with right side drive.

So; i often use the absolutely unambiguous term of starboard and port for the purpose of removing any doubt and it's something anybody can learn and know forever.

Bank one is the right side bank two is the left side.

There is no need to say "from the cockpit" right is always right.

My right arm is on my right side even when you face me and it's on *your* left side.

Right side is the starboard side.

OK so looking from the driver seat the banks are numbered 2 - 1 reading left to right as normal. Looking from outside the car towards the front it would be 1 - 2

andrewwynn 11-28-2025 11:22 AM

Correct

Bank numbering is also logical if you think the rotation of the engine. Starting from the crank to rotation direction bank 1 comes first.

That's a really neat way to think of it.

If you think of the engineering stand point I guess this is the reasoning. And this comes from a doctor with an engineer's mindset.
