bmw x5 e53 air con speed button

Heh all, can anyone remember what underneath the air speed button looks like? I had my car in for some work and the cleaners broke off the button. I think it is just a new button that is needed which clicks in. Images below.

Thanks Andrew, just can barely see it in the video but I think it looks the same. Interesting, the button that I have been looking at getting for my model doesn’t have the extra bits on the back of it. I am wondering if that is specific to that model.

I guess I am wondering how does the button make contact for up or down? I tried pushing the bits in the image but they don't move.

Here is the back of the replacement button for my model. No little plastic bits sticking out to go into the holes in the panel. |
Mine did this. I re-secured the button with two small blobs of black silicon gasket maker at the two central pivot locations - has worked fine for six years and looks perfect.
The white bits in the holes are LEDs. The switch action comes from pushing a small actuator below the small square frames sections... (edited) |
I thought that might be the case initially, but you can see in one of the images that the square frames are connected to the surrounding plastic. I tried to push these initially to see if it changed the speed but the speed didn't change on the display. Unless there is a pressure switch underneath that allows for the flexibility of the plastic when you push it. I was thinking there would be a distinct movement but maybe it is so slight that I can't feel it. Anyway, the speed should have changed when I press those frame squares but no.
I will need further investigation. I will try and get a better picture. |
Actually, I didn't describe it very accurately. The switch action is provided via a very small actuator lever postioned directly below the larger square frame section.

Thanks for that. Try searching for an explanation of the switch and you will not find it. I paused the video and yes, the pressure of the square activates the contact behind it. So, I will go back and try my finger again. The only other thing I am thinking is when the button is in the pressure activates both (for no change) then when you press one side it releases the other and that what causes the change. If this is how it works it is over engineered. This is why it was not changing for me. I will test it out with one finger from each hand.
