2001 X5 driver door handle doesn't work
 

my 118k miles 2001 X5 driver's side door handle stopped working.. i have to open the door from the inside. I am about to order the parts and notice there is the actual door handle unit and then there is the "outside door handle reinforcer which is the internal mechanism.
I don't know which is broken and will probably end up just buying both but thought I'd check here to see if there is a known failure of either which would save me from buying both.

It's almost always the door handle carrier.

I developed a nearly free DIY fix but it's a little towards the difficult side i rate it 7/10 but if you're handy all you need is patience and a steel cable tie.

Search for title awr-fix and return threads not posts you should find my write up. I've fixed maybe 8 or so of these.
