BMW X5 E53 Anti theft fuel cap
Heh all, does anyone know of a good anti-theft fuel cap for a 2005 BMW X5 E53 4.4i? The way gas prices are going this may be a good idea.

The fuel door is locked when you lock the car, I think.
Also, the filler neck is twisted/winding...at least in the E39 5-series. Also, wrote a note and post it in the RR glass "I don't have much gasoline in the tank, about 1/8 full, please don't steal...". Hopefully, the thief will go to another car... |

I didn’t realize the fuel door locks with the car doors for a week or two after I got my e53. There’s an emergency release up next to the fuse block.

I looked up what the lock looks like and it would be hard pressed to open it with a crow bar. But that is apparently what some people are using. So, effectively the lid would be completely damaged. But imagine then if they faced a keyed fuel cap. That may just deter them from this worse scenario.
I am not saying this is happening in my neighbourhood but what if you drive somewhere and leave your car where it is a possibility and lets say prices have increased so much. Considering how much gas this car holds and other large suv’s. Is the fuel cap the same size for most vehicles? I see a few on amazon and the local car shops (which are selling out).Hence the question. |
Of course the good news is that the bmw anti siphoning system means they have to use a small diameter tube….haha. Imagine how long it would take..lol
But seriously, they can still damage the filters by trying to force a large flexible pipe. A anti-theft cap would be an extra deterent. |
The anti roll over check ball or system should prevent theft. A really small hose would be needed to get past it. It would take a long time to drain, then they would only get one side.

Given that the bastards take catalytic converters off with a portable grinder, getting under the car and drilling hole in the tank would only take seconds...

Kids here have done that to trucks with big tanks. Several of them caught themselves on fire too.
|
I was going to say that….one spark..ka-boom! Haven’t heard of the anti roll ball before. Interesting. Is that on all models including mine? 2005 E53 or just a later addition.

It’s quite hard to get a gas tank to even catch fire much less explode. Clearly too risky to take that chance.
Myth busters tried with tracer rounds and i think it took until enough rounds went though gas spilled on the ground and vaporized then more tracers went through it finally ignited. Jay Leno famously lit himself on fire with spilled gas under an engine so there is certainly risk. Vapor is the risk. Working with gas, breeze is important, use a fan if not outdoor. –awr– Using Tapatalk VIP on iPhone |
