Wind noise (solved)
 

I have been chasing a wind noise on my 4.6 for a decade.
Turned out the foam insulation was not adhered well.
The foam sheet was fair. I replaced both drivers door and passenger left
side rear. I used a hair dryer and got it softened and squish able.
Test drive at 80MPH the wind noise is minimal.

I didn't think a poor seal job on the foam panel would be a problem.
For those with a wind noise of undetermined location. Start with the
Door panel.

Sorry for the stupid question, but is this foam located inside the door panel, or is it the seal around the door? I have this same problem on the passenger side of my E53 after calling a locksmith a long time ago because my fob didn't work and my keyhole broke...

If the locksmith wedged the door frame to gain access, you probably have a bent upper door frame... it no longer sits tight against the door seal. Can be sorted at a panel shop.

You mean the vapor barrier, right ?

Thanks for sharing...I sold my E53, I always thought the rear door wind noise was from the outer door seals.

I found a significant source of wind noise at the top of the door pillar trim on the exterior. There's a gap there where the seal had deteriorated. I couldn't figure out how to properly take it apart without a ton of work so I took some closed cell foam rods and stuffed it in the gap using a trim tool. I broke the foam into small pieces and packed it until it was full. It's not visible from the outside and helped a lot.

If it is the seal around the door opening you can replace it. It's not a difficult job. The seals are available.

Not around the door opening (I did that already), it's behind the a-pillar trim and the rear quarter windows.

The rubber seal on quarter windows in the back doors and the C/D pillar windows on mine are pretty badly rotted. I suppose those are no longer available.
