The engine 's suddenly death!

Hello everyone.
This's the first time i post in english, please forgive me for any mistaken.
I've lived in Thailand and just owning 2nd hand X5 3.0i year 2002 70,000 km. usage for 3 months ago.(it's very expensive here)

And i love it very much. Every thing 's fine until a few days ago while i'd ridden in the city , the speed 's about 10 km/h .The engine 's suddenly stopped :tsk:. There're two signs showed on the board (battery charge current and engine oil pressure indiacator) . No problem to started it again.

Every thing is normal like it 's never occur before. It's only firtst and one time i've met. I've asked the former owner, he said that he'd just changed and use the same brand battery a couple months before and he 'd never met this symtom too, and the past history of this car is normal (except for tire, brake pad, and brake motor pump change) serviced followed the indicator light.

On that day i drove to the authorized BMW service center and they used the modic and said everything 's normal .

What can be the source, please advise me. Thank you a lot:o

Scan your engine code, that will tell why it's die.

It's already been checked by computer and show nothing abnormal. What can i do next?

Progrss note: 2 nd dead

Yesterday it'd occured again. :tsk: As above it stopped as i ran on the road at slow speed but this time it can't started for awhile. After stucked on the jammed traffic road for 1 hr. the technician came to me. Finally he got the gasoline cable off and found no oil but only air. The fuel in tank about 20 L.He said that right tank's empty and 20 L. in the other. Then i bought gasoline and add into the tank 70 L. Then after second start it's come .:)
I assume some problems for fuel injection system.
-fuel motor pump and fuse ----> technician told OK
-charcoal filter
-gasoline filter
Can anybody help me think? Please
-Are there something else?
-Which 're the most causes?
-how can i find fuel pathway diagram?
Thanks

Your English is pretty good. If it was a fuel injection problem it would most likely throw a code. Is it possible you got some bad gasoline. If there is moisture in the gas it would have the symptoms you describe.

Sorry just re-read your post. I'm not sure about the X5 but my 540 which is similar has two fuel pumps. One pumps the gas to the engine and the other pumps the fuel from one side of the tank to the other. There is a hump in the gas tank that goes over the drive line. It is the secondary fuel pump and if it fails it will not pump gas to the other side of the tank and will not throw a code. My fuel pump went bad at about 70,000 miles on my 540 so that might be the cause. It is easy to change by yourself and is located under the rear seat.

Thank you . Very quickly in reply 8-) .Yes sir! The technician tole me like that , the fuel from the fuel tank (he told no pump this tank) can't be sent to the empty main tank (and this tank 's a pump) then assume that something's blocking the gas pathway but how can we proof it ?
DoesX5 3.0i 's 1 pump or not?
And the error has no code, again it's 80000 km now , very same to MrLabGuy.

MrLabGuy 04-07-2006 09:33 PM

Not very hard. If you lift the rear seat you will find a round access on each side with wires running to both. In my 540 which should be the same the one on the Passenger side is the main pump and the one on the Drivers side is the auxiliary (secondary) pump. You can remove one or both pumps and have them tested. If the fuel pump goes bad there will be no error sent to the computer.

Again I apologize, it is hard to understand broken English and post quickly. If I understand correctly you are saying the X5 only has one pump? I'm going to go check mine and get back to you. It could still be your pump even if you only have one. Electric fuel pumps are known to go bad and work sometimes erratic before dying completely. Maybe someone here with more X5 experience who can contribute.

You understand correctly, i've seen it just now. It's only one pump in 3.0 i on the right side. But after i'd asked two engineer, they don't think for fuel pump (for any reason i don't sure... it'd gone after add gas...)
