Brakes question

At what mileage did you change your brakes?
I'm almost at 53K miles and there seems to be a lot of meat still left on the current pads. I recall changing the pads on my 3er at around 46K miles.

I'm just curious.
Thanks in advance.

I got 48ish out of my front brakes...they were "ok", but I leaned on the Stlr SA, as my 1 yr of Ext Maint. was about to expire, so they R&R'd the fronts. Rears are still fine, as of 52K now.

We have done v. little stop and go, in our mileage, though the mountain descents eat it up some, and probably balance it out.

Same here...I'm only at 22k and there's not much left on mine. Just waiting for my light to come on any day now. I guessed So Cal traffics can be hard on pads :( R8DX5 and MD must live out in the boonies if they can get more than 50k out of the pads

2001 April build with 78,000+ on my OEM pads which are a little over 1/2 worn. 2/3 of my miles are highway and I gear down using engine compression to slow where applicable.

We had to do F&R at 40K. The F were .75 worn and the R were to the metal. As I wanted to get eliminate the dust problem did both and fitted Brembo/Axxis combo.

What is your current mileage????

tommys103 02-27-2006 03:58 PM

2001 3.0 w/82,000 miles...i bought the car CPO in March of '04 w/ 35k miles...then in Jan '05 i replaced pads with raybestos at around 55-60k miles - and now rotors warped so i did the axxis/brembo combo - i really am a rough driver and i live in staten island where the roads aren't great so i shouldn't complain about the ride of my X as much as i do - normal driving would get more use out of brakes than me.

R8DX5 02-27-2006 04:10 PM

Thanks Tommy.

tommys103 02-27-2006 04:11 PM

Did you replace them yourself? How much did it cost you roughly for that setup? My car is due for a brake job and Im looking around for options. How hard is it to change the brakes on the X5. I know I can change the brakes on a Honda anyday just wondering about the X. Anyone with more inputs on this please post away. Thanks

Within 1 month of both my X's to put on Axis pads!
So worth it unless you like cleaning wheels every weekend.

I got my 2001 4.4 with 46k on it. The fronts had been done once before I got it. Did the rears at 60k and second set of fronts at 66k. Put OEM on the rears and Brembo rotors and PBR pads on the fronts.

not bad, the dealer wanted $1,100 to do the job and keep in mind that this new rotors are better than the OEM........

so i saved a lots of money and have better breakes tham the OEM one

Front was replaced at 18k, the Rear is going in next week at 21k. The hills in San Francisco really kills your brakes.

Just because you need new pads doesnt neccessarily mean that you need new discs. The dealer just does it so that they can charge either you, or BMW for the extra labor and parts. I've never understood why brake fluid needs to be changed at all, it's a sealed system.... anyways, I just got my first pad change at 75K:thumbup: Discs are good to go, very little wear on them, which is understandable because the discs are much harder than the pads. I bought dustless pads ie Axxis deluxe, for around $120 for front and rear. Had my backyard mechanic put them on, my eibach sport suspension, a new thermostat, complete coolant flush, skid plate remount, and oil change for $300. I supplied all parts. I would find someone that charges by the actual hour to put on your pads, it takes less than an hour to put them in on all 4 sides and replace all sensors.
