Navigation Retrofit

i've decided to go with the navigation retrofit...i just bought a 16:9 widescreen monitor...i spoke to Colin of SavageBMW and he told me this:

"I’ve been looking around for you Aaron. There is no ACTUAL retro kit from BMW. However, my good friend Chris that used to work @ Crevier helped out one of the X5world members to do his. I checked on some of the parts and some are no longer being produced. I’m not sure how bad you would like to have it, but I’m sure it would be very taxing on your patience and expensive to boot! If you would like me to, I can check availability on the entire parts list and get back to you. From what I hear from Chris and read on the forums, a lot of outside resources are required to complete the installation. If I had to take a preliminary guess, I would have to say that it would cost between 3 and 4 thousand to totally retro. Eeek! Let me know what your thoughts are and we can go from there."

since parts are no longer being produced where else will i be able to look around for them besides ebay?

also i was told if i don't have DSP i need a BMW amp...i have a JL audio amp so im curious if i can use that. i didn't know the retrofit would have so many obstacles...thanks in advance!

The ebay seller 'roveractive' sells a complete OEM retro fit kit with everything you need, it is about 3K i think, it is a genuine BMW kit from europe.
There is a guy in Orange that will do the job, I have spoken to him a few times, he has done about 5 X5 retrofits, he came as a recomendation from someone @ crevier.
Or you can buy the main bits from ebay, monitor and computer then all the other bits are about $1200 I think from Vaheh @ crevier.
It is still somthing I think about but for now I have decide to spend the money on a set of 20" for my x and possibly get a aftermarket nav later.
There is a new product in the uk called Road Angel it is a nav and radar detector in one, looks great with touch screen and nice and slim.
Good luck.
BTW did you get any further with the washer jet retrofit.
:) :)

Tyrone, J.Puma and myself are the 'pioneers' of the nav retrofit. I think all the research we put into it has helped a lot of people do the same. I never got around to completing my step by step write-up but Puma has done a good job of this. It is posted on this site in the articles section. If you have any questions, I would be glad to help.

First off, whether or not you have DSP sound shouldn't really matter. If you have this option then you will have to get it re-coded at the dealer after the retrofit. Another requirement is that your vehicle should have the 'High' on-board computer for the retrofit. While it is not mandatory, you will lose some of the nav features without it. To get around this, you hay have to replace your complete instrument cluster. Cost around $450 or so.

Secondly, the retrofit kits available in Europe (and from Roveractive on ebay) have the Euro radio module. This will most likely not work in North America due to the different radio frequencies, in particular the AM radio besides other issues. So you may still have to buy another new radio module locally which will cost around $450-$500.

Do your homework before you start buying parts...Good Luck!

Just go aftermarket, that is what I did and have no complaints...

This is the setup I would go with if you are willing to spend 3-4k.

The Alpine IVA-D310 DVD/CD/MP3/WMA Receiver/AV Head Unit
http://www.alpine-usa.com/images/pro...s/iva-d310.jpg
It Runs for about 1400 (Retail), ebay it, and it should be cheaper.

and The Alpine NVE-N872A Advanced DVD Navigation System
http://www.alpine-usa.com/images/pro.../nve-n872a.jpg

Retails for around 1700, again, Ebay it.

-Just my 2 cents.

It's a cool dvd player but I want the built in monitor look not a flip out one..one of the main reasons why I want the oem navigation/dvd. I know a someone on this board had I believe a Pioneer or Alpine monitor built into the dash but I cannot seem to find his post.

Yea I did see his auction, its about $3500 w. shipping and like King said I would need a US radio tuner (another $4-500) + I don't think his retrofit kit comes with a dvdrom..so in all w. installation would be about $5,000 which is far out of my budget...plus I already have a monitor anyways. I was hoping to spend only $2-2500 on parts but looks like that'll be tough

As for the washers I'll be installing them next week..will keep you posted.

Sell the screen and buy an aftermarket in-dash nav/av system. It'll be a lot easier that way.

Pioneer makes a really nice, non flip-out.. The AVIC-Z1 In-Dash HDD Navigation and Multimedia A/V Receiver with DVD... Runs for abou 2200.

http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pn...632461,00.html

http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pi...Z1%20large.jpg

This is straight from Pioneer's Website "The AVIC-Z1 is a double-DIN sized, all-in-one navigation system that uses a 30GB hard disk drive (HDD), to deliver information, entertainment, and convenience to drivers. The large-capacity HDD stores the entire Tele Atlas database, including nearly 11 million points of interest (POI) in more than 340 categories. The large 7-inch screen shows a high-resolution map with easy-to-recognize icons, and touch-panel operation permits quick access to navigation functions and audio-visual sources"

There is someone on here that makes the adapter to install this into your X, it was a little exspensive. However, no one else makes one, and I imagine it takes him awhile to make them. Worth it IMO.

Zulu95 02-25-2006 09:02 PM
