Loud Engine Idle
 

Any quick suggestions on how to lower the loud engine noise?

The car seems sluggish to accelerate also.

2001 X5 3.0 w/82,000 miles.

I'd guess there is something going on/wrong vis a vis your description.

"lower the loud engine noise" is a symptom. Something else is amiss and needs to be diagnosed; that sluggish accel is connected, I'd guess.

The Xperts here, need more info.
