X5 Remote Start----any Takers?

Has anyone had A remote start done or installed one themselves in a 03 x5 3.0?

ekaz 02-28-2006 03:49 PM

A few people have had them installed, not a real popular option. I have one that I plan on installing one of these days....

BIMMERE53 02-28-2006 03:54 PM

I have a done a bunch, never on an X5, the only issue is the doorlocks having no operation when the truck is runing.

ekaz 02-28-2006 03:57 PM

I haven't read anything about the door locks not working.

CanadianX5 02-28-2006 04:58 PM

I've done a bunch.
My only issue is that the key memory seat position does not work any more.
The factory alarm , transponder security and doorlocks still work fine.

SuaveX5 02-28-2006 05:07 PM

the stealer installed mine and when you start the car the door locks work with the remote that come with the remote starter.

BIMMERE53 02-28-2006 05:58 PM

CanadianX5, any tips on locks and bypass?

CanadianX5 02-28-2006 06:05 PM

I cant remember of the top of my head which wires you tap into.
But i do remember that I have to run 3 18 gauge wires into the drivers door. Its a pain in the ass because of the factory door molex.
I always end up drilling a hole through an empty place in the molex just big enough to pass the wires through so it remains factory looking.
The first one i did years ago i screwed up and destroyed one side of the molex.:thumbdown
It took me about 2 hours of sodering and testing wires to repair.
I have it down to a science now.

And for transponder bypass , purchase the OEM key ring
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...90&hg=32&fg=30
(item 7)
and have the installer make his own transponder unit.
I ve found that all the aftermarket units have a hard time picking the signal up from the key 100% of the time.

BIMMERE53 02-28-2006 09:48 PM

Thank you for the info. I am 1 step ahead of you, I already made the ring with a factory ring, I was an installer for 14 years. I don't miss it, just never did the X5.

Hey Calgary:

Do you install here in town?

Thanks

CanadianX5 03-01-2006 12:47 AM

The shop i was working at closed down last fall so i dont really have a place to do it right now.(non heated garage)
But if you have a warm place for me to install it takes about 4 hours.
Do you have a brand in mind?
I recommend Compustar.

If you have a place i'll do it for you.
No charge but you have to let me do mine there too.
And I can get the starters at cost.(about 160 ish)tax in

What part of town are you in?

Im up in Panorama Hills close to SilverCity theater.

Would the system work better if the car was unlocked 1st?

I would be very interested in this on the X5 and have a Range Rover HSE to do as well. Would like to be able to start the cars in summer with the AC on full. Got a couple of months before the heat really kicks in again.

Do you have any links to a system that I can use?

Thanks.

This may be my firs mod, although, I guess from the boards, there are some pros/cons. I got quote 750 for auto image in NJ Viper remote start with 1 mile range.

When you're ready, call Sean at SRAudio, and tell him Ed from the BMW boards sent you ;)

I think he'll do better than $750

He's in Lebanon, NJ 908-437-0222. [email protected]

Ed

I have a Viper remote start on mine and have had no issues whatsoever - it was installed by the previous owner. Once the vehicle is started remotely, the parking lights flash intermittenly to let you know it is running. I can unlock with the Viper remote once the X has been remotely started. Once in the car, you have to insert the key and turn it to the start position before putting it in gear or the car will shut off.

The previous owner did mention to me that he has had issues if you try and inter-mingle the remotes (lock with the factory key and unlock with the Viper remote) so I try not to do that. I keep the Viper remote by itself in the car and whenever I think I might need it, I grab it, lock the doors with it, and throw it in my pocket. I always make sure to unlock with that same remote.

Do you know if this could be done on a 2003 ML 320? Can you recommend anybody in Toronto that might be able to do it?

tnx.

CanadianX5 01-09-2008 03:33 PM

What key do you have for the ignition?
Is it an metal key that is inserted into the ignition or is it the one thats "Y" shaped and plastic with the infared transmitter at the base?

If its a metal key you should have a problem installing it by any reputable place.
If its the "Y" shaped one you might be out of luck, I have tried a couple of those ones (2002 and 2003 CLK 430's) and was not successful.
However that was 4-5 years ago and there might me a module/adapter of some sort that I am unaware of as I have not been installing for a while now.

Fly Guy 10-09-2008 03:32 AM

I'm trying to do this now? Any good shops in Atlanta?

LeMansX5 10-09-2008 10:20 AM

Bad idea. Compromises security plus issues with warranty.
