Locked in my only key today

I locked in my key today, after so many calls made to locksmiths, dealer and other people, I had to brake the little triangle rear left door window :bawling:
I screwed up my car...can't believe that
Any ideas how much that will cost me to replace?

No Roadside? Should be possible to get in to the passenger side manually, right? Worked for my 740... RealOem.com should have the part.... Yeah, here it is- Not sure if this link will work out cause I think the site needs cookies to store the model #, but it's $168 for the rear side window:

Sorry to hear bout that!

Thanks for your reply. No, nothing worked. I called AAA, they said cannot open the car, cannot tow the car without the key. Gave me a few "special" locksmith phone numbers, everybody refused to come open it. Called the dealer, service guy said either I have to tow it in (which AAA refused to do) or I have to order a new key which takes about 4 days to come in. Couldn't leave it in Home Depot parking lot, somebody was gonna tow it away without carrying if he will brake something or not. Try to open it myself, pried the front passenger door and reached the unlock button in the middle. No luck! Then I decided between I ruine my car to just choose the smallest damage and to brake the window. My luck, window didn't brake by using wrench ot anything like that, had to buy a hammer from the store. Finally broke it open and reached for the key.
Sad story, what a *^%#$@ day...
BTW, the link you sent me, isn't this glazing only "tinting" or it's the actual window? And I broke the little window on the door, not the on next to it, so it should be 04 FIXED DOOR WINDOW, BLACK, LEFT 1 51348249929 $55.80.
But is this for the window itself or just the tinting?
Thanks for your patience reading all this.

Just curious, How did u lock the key inside ?

X5Jay 03-11-2006 01:36 PM

Sounds like a really rough day razr - I'm sure it'll all work out for you in the end. You probably should have called a car thief to help you get into the car - I've read many posts on how quickly and easily they can get into X5s and with minimal damage - just don't know exactly how they do it. Kind of ironic isn't it?

razrv3 03-11-2006 01:42 PM

Yeah, that was the case X5Jay, I left my jacket in the trunk and then when I closed it I realized I locked the key in. It was in my jacket.
Tough day, called the dealer, they said $65, I hope it's the true price.

X5Jay 03-11-2006 01:48 PM

If it ends up costing you only $65 bucks, I'd say you're one lucky dude! GL!

razrv3 03-11-2006 02:12 PM

Yeah, after tough yesterday, I need that luck. I hope I find the original factory tinted window. Anyways, duct taped it for now, and I'm off to the mountain.

I thought BMW had thing thing where you call them and they open it by phone or bmw asist or whatnot...

The Big Easy 03-11-2006 04:06 PM

There is a way to get into the car and BMW assist should do it for you. Involves loosening the strip directly above the licence plate that houses the bulbs, activating a lever, and access to the vehicle is through the trunk, alarm does go off, but your key will be inside and alarm can be switched off.

How did the key end up inside?

Cheers,

Been there done that. :withstupi Exactly the same type of situation. Boy did I feel like an idiot. Had to have someone drive me to get the spare house keys, go home, get my spare X5 key, back to the parking lot, then home. At least I didn't have to break a window. :tsk:

razrv3 03-12-2006 09:59 PM

I called the dealer, they said $65, if it's only that much, man I'm set. I went skiing this weekend, the fun of driving AWD X5 in the snow had me forget about that stupid window.
I guess this is the only way you can lock in a key. Leave it in the trunk and close it.
Anyway, will keep you updated guys...

robocal 03-12-2006 10:17 PM

After reading that tale of woe I think it's time I got a spare key!! Only have the one at the moment.

Yeah, don't wait too long as I did...

Bruciebonuz 03-13-2006 12:39 PM

Same thing happened to me this weekend - we were 100 miles from home on a day trip, changing our daughter's nappy (diaper!) in the trunk and my wife put the keys down in the trunk after having opened the trunk only (rest of the doors stayed locked). Then, just as I was trying to open the rear door to put my daughter in the car seat, my wife slammed (why do women always do that! ) the trunk shut and, just as she did, we both looked at each other, time stood still, and we knew what she'd done! Car locked, keys inside! :tsk: Fortunately BMW assist came in 30 minutes and opened the trunk in less than 10 minutes using the method Mindfull describes above. The alarm (which was pretty pathetic) went off and then he was in......makes you think twice about ever leaving anything in the trunk for too long. If it had been the AA or the RAC I am sure they would have smashed the window to get in.

Will be getting BMW assist again when the warranty expires!!

razrv3 03-13-2006 06:47 PM

When I called the dealer, that idiot on the phone told me there's only 2 ways of opening the car:
1. Order a new key, will come in within 4 business days
2. Brake one of the windows open and get your key.

I'm sick of unprofessionalism of dealers. Sometimes I think they hire the idiots only and knowledgeable people they let go.

The Big Easy 03-14-2006 04:33 AM

That has cost you a window.
Remember people contributing to this board, really do know their vehicle spec quite well. Honestly, I am not surprised anymore by stealers' ingnorance.......they are pushing units, and that is all they care about. However on the rare occasion, do you find people who know there stuff.

Cheers,

Bruciebonuz 03-14-2006 05:12 AM

Really think you should complain and see what they can do for you - they should know their cars better!!

Tomaz 03-14-2006 11:59 PM

This is what I do to every vehicle I've owned.

Cut an extra key, wrap it in plastic wrap, duct tape it in a convenient spot, like behind a bumper panel. This method has saved me from experiences as described above.

I've used the old magnetic "hide a key" boxes, but they vibrate off, and there is not that much metal to stick them to anymore.

razrv3 03-15-2006 12:00 AM

Yes, I got the receipt with me:
Glue kit 83190147369 - $54
Door glass fixed 51348249929 - $62.50

I ordered a spare key also, $171.25 and they want $65 more to ptogram it.
I remember I saw someplace a DIY giude how to reprogram the key, so I told them I would take the key only, no programming needed. If I can't do it, I'll take it to them.
Good thing, I'll have a friend of mine to put the glass on free of charge.

Bruciebonuz, complain to who? They don't give a damn. They are independant dealers, and they have enough business to make money without selling me a freakin' glass for my door.
So, talking to managers will be a waste of time only. That's what I think out of my own experience.
Anyway, my spare key turned out to be $171.25+$54+$62.50, instead of only $171.25

You guys should learn and not make my mistake.

Last week we were at the shore for the start of week vacation. Son asks to have the car key so he can get his boogie board out (I hesitate oh so briefly considering the worst case scenario, which did not include what occurred); key is turned over to him. BTW-bought car three weeks prior, still awaiting a second key from Germany.... son comes back into house 4 minutes later crying. Wife asks, "What is wrong." He says "I locked the keys in the car." I immediately think, Oh my freaking goodness!. Then, wait, BMW Assist will remotely be able to unlock the doors. Now all I have to do is get a phone number for them. No internet access so I make phone calls to friends who give me the number.

I call them and they tell me that they cannot unlock remotely and that the car will have to be towed to nearest dealership and I will sign a waiver for them to force entry into the car. I tell them no way! I call a locksmith who tells me that he cannot get into the car because it is a BMW! He recommends another locksmith. I call this locksmith who tells me that he will come out.

Locksmith arrives, uses a wedge to pry passenger door slightly ajar so he can finagle his tool into the car. Alarm sounds, he hits the unlock key and pulls on the door handle to open car. All in less than 8 minutes! Total charge is $65 (on a Sunday afternoon) and I give him a $100 because I would have been willing to pay twice that!!!! BMW Assist is wrong to guide you to tow the vehicle to a dealership when there other ways to accomplish this. I would really like to hear about the "other" way mentioned previously.

yeowzer 08-28-2006 11:35 AM

It's amazing the BMW Assist has no remote unlocking. Locked my keys in my Tahoe once; called Onstar and they unlocked my door.

It's on the X5World front page, but I've cut and pasted it in here for you:

Reprogramming Key Fob

To do this procedure you need to have one working key and one key that needs to be programmed. With both keys, get in the car and close all windows and doors. Put working key into the ignition and turn to position 1 (the accessories should turn on). Turn the key back to position 0 and take key out of the ignition. Using the working key, hold down the unlock button, press the Roundel (lock button) 3 times, and release the unlock button. Doors should lock and unlock. With the new key, hold down the unlock button and press the Roundel (lock button) 3 times and let go of the unlock button. Doors should lock and unlock and you're done!!

Alternate procedure if above doesn't work or if you do not have a working remote:

1. Turn key to position 1 five times very quickly
2. Remove key
3. Hold unlock button then press lock button 3 times, release unlock button.
4. If you have another key do the same button pressing within 30 seconds
5. Turn on igntion to finalize

broknlgs24 08-28-2006 04:36 PM

sorry to hear about ur ordeal. it just occurred to me
that i never use that button on the remote. whenever
i need to open the rear hatch, i press the door unlock
button twice, then open the hatch.
