I've got the same problem and would like to take just the aluminium part off. Will removing just the rubber bungs allow the aluminium plate to be removed and polished?

Have been using this product to clean my aluminum running boards. Seems to work very well for removing tough brown/yellow staining. Some stains require repeated attempts...but they eventually come out.
