NAV DVD Question?

I have a 2004 X4 with nav and ive been using the original DVD it came with. My question is how often does BMW update them DVDs and where can i get one.
The reason why i ask is because it seems that as my x5 gets older its not giving me directions as good as it used to. I think it needs updated info for maps and stuff.

Also how much do they cost and can you get them anywhere besides the dealer.

Updates have been about once a year and can be ordered at http://navteq.com. They run about $200, and the latest 2006.2 disk was just recently released.

Not really. I have a family member who purchased a new 2005 X5 and received a 2004-2 DVD. She purchased her X in May of 2005. I was hoping that she had the latest  but it was better than ..................

I have an '03 4.6 that refuses to take a navigation disc newer than what came in it (2003.2, I believe). I tried the 2005.2 and 2004.2 discs, but the display read something to the effect of "Invalid navigation disc in drive." Are all X5s supposed to be upgradable? The dealer said something about a difference between green and blue discs... They'd had success with one but not the other. Any ideas?

May be you have a MK III nav drive, which is a CD drive. You may have to upgrade to MKIV DVD drive, if you want to use DVD discs.

There are two different versions of the Nav DVD disk (one has a green label and one has a blue label). One is for the new 5 and 7 series BMW's that use the MOST bus and the other is for the older generation BMW platforms (such as the e53 X5) that still use the i-bus. They are not interchangable.

An 03 should have a MkIV drive unless someone swapped it out for a MkIII. If the face plate of the nav drive says DVD on it then it's a MkIV.

Doubtful that you got the 2006 DVD, as it was just recently released.

I have the DVD drive. Thanks for the confirmation about the difference in discs. I'm surprised to read that as the Navteq website gave me the same part number for 5 and 7 series discs as for the X5 (I suspected that there might be a difference). Kooky.
