New Dinan CAI installed

Got the Dinan Cold Air Intake installed on Thursday... Definitely worth the wait! There is a noticable increase in available torque all throughout the RPM band - but particularly around 3500-4500. Feels just like a 4.8 now
Oh, and the engine REALLY growls now... I went to the dealer for my 15,000 mile service yesterday, and when it was done and I started her up out front, people from inside the showroom walked out to come check her out.

Great news mine should be in soon too. Im glad you like it i feel much better know about bying it. by the way when do you hear the most difference in sound. Like what rpm. Also how much did they charge you to install it and how much time did they take.

Another good idea! Wish I had a video camera... (I don't think my camera phone will do it justice!)

Yeah, I think you'll be pleased Tony. After driving with it for a few days now, I am starting to appreciate the improvement more and more... (maybe the stock ECU took several miles to remap itself properly to maximize the increase in air...?) Feels like it pulls much more strongly above 3000 rpm. I imagine it will be better yet when Dinan releases their s/w to match it.
By the way, the sound is noticable at all RPMs. I don't hear a loud suck sound like you can with some intake kits, but that's probably because it's so well enclosed and buffered from the engine (to keep the air cooler, of course).

It looks like a great design. I'll post some pics...

What did they do with the small tube that was attached to the air-box?

It usually does take the DME a few miles to adapt to the incresed airflow, so for anyone who's going to get one, don't floor it for about 100 miles.

DINANM3 04-03-2006 12:33 AM

i was always told that for the ECU to properly adapt you have to push it hard so the motor is under full load and the ECU can properly adapt. If you go real easy it will just take longer to adapt. also there is no ill affect onb the engine if you just floor the thing as soon as you get it installed.

aus 04-03-2006 07:56 PM

Running lean has "no ill affect????"
It's your engine.
It's true that if you run your car hard, the DME will adapt to it and you may get more power out of it, but it would be wise to let it adapt to the increased airflow first.

What's the risk of taking it easy for a few days? What's the risk of running lean??? You can decide for yourself. You probable won't have any problems, but why risk it.

crosvs 04-03-2006 08:03 PM

hm. the AFE magnum force intake definitely does not produce a "growl." strange. definitely some whooshing as i've mentioned along with a perhaps a slight feeling of increased torque. i'll have to race my buddy's CLK350 because he used to be juuuuuuuuuuuuuuust a hair faster than me off the line and from a rolling start (at any speed) and i'm hoping now we're neck and neck at least :)

Intel55 04-03-2006 09:50 PM

Aus is somewhat right. You have to watch running lean after putting on an intake. Sometimes both the fuel trims will be running max rich to correct the lean condition. If they stay maxed for x period of time you will get a warning light. If the pcm cannot adjust the trims enough and you stay lean you will know it when the weather gets a lil warmer with all the "gravel" rolling around in your engine when accelerating. On the Corvette it takes 50 miles for the pcm to relearn. I would assume it is roughly similar with the BMW. So I would go easy for the 50 miles and be on the lookout for a ses lean code. If you have an obdii reader for the bmw you can watch it all happen in real time. :)

DINANM3 04-04-2006 10:52 PM

hey dinanx5 did you get any pics yet by any chance.

DinanX5 04-05-2006 09:29 AM

Not yet... :tsk: I'll try to get some tonight.

For those that took advantage of the Dinan rebate promotion, I got my Dinan CAI rebate in the mail yesterday - about $140. Took about 7 weeks...

X5ster 05-23-2006 04:46 PM

do any of you guys know which retailer could send dinan parts overseas? or is there any site that has an online shop that takes credit card or something?

surreal 05-23-2006 04:47 PM

did we ever get to see pictures....and my Dinan dealer is giving an additional 10% off...pretty excited

DinanX5 05-23-2006 04:54 PM

I still haven't taken the pictures as promised yet... :tsk:
I intend to though after my next detail job - and then I'll definitely post them!

As for overseas shipments, I'm not sure, but you may want to try contacting Dinan directly and see what they recommend.
