ricky.agrawal - AFE Intake

Ricky, there's been a lot of talk recently about
the AFE Intake not being compatible w/ the 4.6is.
can you either confirm or deny that the AFE Intake
will or will not work w/ the 4.6is'? and if not, is the
vendor who supplied them for the group buy going
to accept returns?

I talked to aFe last week and was told there is a "flap" or valve that makes the 4.6 incompatible with the CAI that aFe offers. Our only options, to my knowledge are Dinan and GruppeM.

There is also another option which is a drop in filter a lot of the guys on the e46 M3 site are raging over. It's not K&N. Off the top of my head, I can't remember the manufacturer right now, but I don't think they have a web site as of yet. So, we will need to contact someone who is performing a group buy for the M3 crowd. They could find out for us. I'll ask around this week.

Compared to the K&N, the pleats are twice as deep giving more volume and "better sound" on heavy intake. I posted something ealrier last week about this and gave the name of the filter company if you do a search.

Remember: the aFe will NOT work for the 4.6!

Which stirs something: why caan't we manufacture our own CAI by buying a piece of carbon fiber tubing, route it down the right side of the engine bay and put a K&N filter at the end of it?

Thnk back on the earlier versions of the Dinan CAI's for the e36 M3's and such. They were along the same lines. Matter of fact, it wouldn't have to be carbon fiber. Just some good ductwork material, a bracket or two and a clamp on K&N. Should work. Right?

if this is indeed true, this truly sucks. i purchased
a kit during the group buy and was told it would fit
my 4.6is. any idea where this "flap" is?

I truly do not know. Do a search on the web for aFe. Call their number and talk to someone in tech support. I believe the guy's name was Michael(?).

He informed me they had problems with something nside the stock ductwork about this "flap" or "valve" that made it overly difficult to adapt the aFe CAI to the 4.6.

this is even though they have kits for all other models. Everyone except the 4.6. Dang!
