Rear tailgate sturdiness

Is it bad to sit or step on the rear tailgate? I did it quite a bit today when I was climbing in and out of the cargo area. Then I noticed the rear tailgate is supported only by two telescoping rods made out of PLASTIC. Is it sturdy enough?

Max load weight for the tailgate is in the manual: 440 lbs (or 200 kg).

440 is pretty stable for you simply jumping up and down on it.... ;)

The outside of the rods (i.e. the pretty cover) might be plastic but I assure you that the rods are metal on the inside....

The hatch is pretty darn durable -- just don't go too crazy.
