About s/w upgrades
 

My 2002 X5 4.6 goes into the shop next Monday. Does anyone know if I should ask them to lay down the latest and greates version of both engine and transmission s/w for my ride?

I've read somewhere that some upgrades have been made for the tranny(?). But, I'm not sure of the year of the vehicle.

Since I'm a new owner/driver, would it pay to reset everything so it now can learn my style of driving?

I have noticed she's running VERY rich. It would be for this reason alone that I would consider upgrading the engine s/w from someone like Euro-whoever. My thoughts are that any tweaking would, if anything, lean out the engine a little. And, by default, not only give me a little more HP but a little better mileage efficiency.

Anyone?

If I remember correctly, the software was for MY04+ models. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

not sure about software updates for your model, but if she is running rich I would check out the MAF sensor and maybe clean it. Also, you could put an AFE type intake on her to lean her out some.

There wre only two (2) CAI systems for our X5's: Dinan and GruppeM. The aFe will not fit the 4.6 per aFe tech support.

But there has to be a way!

Yeah, I am not sure about the AFE fitting onto a 4.6. I have read from others here who have a 4.8 that it works, but not sure about a 4.6. Maybe do a serach for those with a 4.6 and an AFE intake. I am not familiar with GruppeM and the Dinan price is an ass rape.

Bruce, As the old saying goes..."if it's not broken, don't fix it". Unless you have trouble with your tranny shifting improperly, I would NOT get the software upgrade as there will always be the possibility that the new software will make things worst!

I read this on z4um... They claim it resets the learning process. But what isn't clear is if the vehicle starts relearning from scratch, or if it just forgets what it has learned for one drive.

Let me look up the link, I'll get back to this thread. Basically it involves turning your key to position II for a number of seconds (from a cold turn on - the electronics have to have shutdown). Turn the key off for a number of seconds, and then turn the engine all the way on...

If memory serves me right, the GruppeM is $800. And, if the pictures are accurate, the assembly just mounts off to the side and does not draft cold air from under the vehicle.

Knowing all of this, it seems that all of us 4.6 guiys have only one real CAI option: Dinan.

However, I need to spend some time under the hood to see if there is a way to fabricate a CAI system that uses a K&N cone filter and can be placed as close to street level as possible via some ductwork.
