Who has aftermarket Angel Eyes?

I was thinking of getting angel eyes and was wondering what you guys think? I have a 2002 with Xenons and was hoping to go through customangeleyes.com as I live close to them. Who has Angel Eyes? Who did you purchase them from? And do you think it is worth the upgrade? Thanks.

Jason

UCrewX5 04-25-2005 12:08 PM

I have them in my 2001 X5. They are from Umnitza. Although my experience with Umnitza didn't even come close to what King went through, there were some underlying issues that matched my own. Is it worth the upgrade? Absolutely

And I have them through Dave @ Custom Angel Eyes myself. ZERO problems, 100% enjoyment, the AEs are my 2nd favorite mods on the X5!!!

Hey Jangler,
See if custom angel eyes gives a group deal and I might be in as well. I live about 5 hours from boston but might be willing to make a mini vacation out of it for the weekend if you can work out a possible group price.

joll 04-25-2005 01:40 PM

I did the "Custom Angel Eyes" mod with BMW E46 Angel Eyes from Ebay:

I contacted Umnitza, and he said he can make a 6000k Angel Eye kit for me to match my Xenons, and soon to be HID fogs. They are $150, still a little iffy going with them, after the whole ordeal with King and many other members.

Customangeleyes.com charge alot for Angel Eyes. They get there rings from Umnitza. Why are they $700+ more?

Make sure you are comparing apples to apples. I think the $150 Umnitza price is just for the parts. Installation of the rings into your headlights is additional. I suspect the CustomAngelEyes price includes parts and labor.

and i can vouch for dave's work at custom angel eyes!

hmm i think the entire new headlight assemblies, AE's, clear corners and the remote control was 1350 (also included his install, but that was very special treatment i think -ask dave if he'll do it again). they are made by Hella also. i also was able to sell my oem headlights on ebay.

swingline 04-25-2005 05:21 PM

would it also be hard to install on a 01?

The overall project isn't what I would call "easy", but it is easiest to do this on the 2000 through 2002 models. 2003 is much more difficult due to the new sealants BMW used that year, which make opening the lenses without damaging them very hard. The 2004 and newer have Angel Eyes stock from BMW.

TopazDave 04-25-2005 05:33 PM

X5 Angel Eyes

Hey guys,

This is Dave from CustomangelEyes.com

A group buy is definitely a possibility, if you can get 5 orders together, it will drop the price significantly.

As for the difference between Umnitza's product and ours, Umnitza is selling just the bare rings (which BTW are not made to be used on X5 headlights but instead e46) where we are completely modifying the insides of the headlights including custom molded brackets and forms to make them look and fit like OEM. In addition we have standalone harnesses made specifically for the X5, and re-seal the headlights to "better then BMW" standards, and we have NEVER had any issues with condenstaion. All our headlights have a warranty.

If you have any questions shoot an email to [email protected] or call (978)884-8377

Dave

Niagara 04-25-2005 05:39 PM

If the price is right I am in. What does that include and can we send our lights out for retrofit? I have a 2001 with zenon.

DrewX5 04-25-2005 06:51 PM

I just spoke to Dave and here is what I got:

Regular price:
$900 for the Angel eyes
$450 for head light assembly "refinished"-"optional"
$100 for cleared out head lights- "optional"
$75 for remote start of headlights -"optional"
$150 for installation by Dave -"optional"
Total for everything is $1675

You can save money by installing it yourself and if you have your own headlights that you will be sending in. Or you sell them privately on eBay and buy the headlights from Dave.

Group buy pricing "if we can get 5 members"
He will reduce the overall package by $300-400 bucks. - Overall package for everything between $1275/$1375. I guess it really depends on how many people we can get.

He plans on coming to NJ-NY area around June, so if we can line up a group buy we do not have to travel to Boston for the installation.

More info at www.customangeleyes.com

King 04-25-2005 08:40 PM

Do yourself a favor and avoid dealing with unprofessional people like Umnitza. Do a quick search here, on bimmerfest and on the Roadfly groups...Not just the X5 boards, but the 5 series and 3 series boards as well, and you will be amazed with the number of people that have complaints against them! :tsk:

I think I probably did a bad thing by ordering my DDEs from them... I ordered them 8 days ago, and other than an e-mail last Monday to confirm my order, I've heard nothing... Who knows what's going on. :(

That is perhaps because umnitza sells stuff for all sorts of car makes, and does not focus the effort on a particular specialty? A jack of all trades does not do anything best.

broknlgs24 04-28-2005 10:14 AM

would he be able to do this for an '03? also, in looking at some pics on their website, the inner ring is smaller than the actual light? will this new group buy provide the correct size inner rings?

Yes we can do Angel Eyes for the '03s but you will have to purchase a complete set of headlights with the Angel Eyes already installed from us.

We now use new rings that were made specifically for the X5 application and the whole system has been designed to compliment the look the headlights.

Dave

The $450 is for reconditioned-BMW xenon headlights..they are not brand new, but are as "good as new" after being reconditioned by us.

Dave - having to go the route of purchasing a complete set of headlights from u and really only interested in the angel eyes; what would the cost be for me thru the Group Buy (that is, if i can even participate)?

ok. so that would be for those of us w/ the '03 models w/ the new glue.
having an '03, i would have to go w/ at least the 1st 2 items on the list.

DrewX5 04-28-2005 04:52 PM

When I say refinished, it is not a new headlight assembly. He refinishes the lens, removing the pitting and scratches on the lense making it look new.

So how many people here are in for the group buy?

I am in, is anyone else?

joll 04-30-2005 08:31 PM

Some new pictures on my X5 with Custom Angel Eyes DIY mod, "SilverVision" bulb upgrade and Xenon 5000K HID Fog Light (will change to 6500K to match better).
Angel Eyes is CCFL bought on Ebay for BMW E46 incl. brackets for mounting the rings. The low beam ring is installed using some dots quick epoxy (and yes - you can remove the glue holding the low beam ring without damaging your headlight's)

Anyone else hate how the low beam rings don't go all the way around the light housing? It would look alot better if it went all the way around it. Just a thought. :)

What's the status of this Group Buy?

Dave, any word on whether i can participate and what my cost would be?

RealShakaZulu 05-09-2005 10:20 PM

Umnitza Site Visit...

Okay it appears that the guys in Boston do an excellent job, but I live in CA'lly (now - NYer for life though), have a 2003 and would love to save some $$$ on the mod :2thumbs: so...

I intend to pay a visit to Umnitza manana present them with the complaints and hear their side of the story. I don't doubt the complaints, just want to see if they have/intend to rectify the situation. Since they have a 925 area they can not be too far away (I think they are in Berkeley, CA).

Will holla back when I return.

TopazDave 05-09-2005 11:42 PM

Angel Eye Group Buy

RealShakaZulu- Umnitza does not modify the headlights like we do, they simply install their rings in a headlight that they are not made for.

broknlgs24- You can participate in the group buy.

Let me know who is definately in the group buy, and what you are looking for, so I can set up some pricing.

His rings are no bigger then any other rings. If you want to have rings glued right onto your lenses, with visible glue and wires then go right ahead and do it that way. It will look cheap, trust me I have alot of expereince with these headlights. It will not look like they belong on a BMW.

Not trying to mean to the DIY'ers...but just giving an educated and honest opinion.

If you want a product made directly for this vehicle, then check out our headlights.

broknlgs24 05-10-2005 04:49 PM

dave - what is the remote start option? is that just so i can turn the AE's on w/o the X5 being on?

kirkX5m 05-10-2005 04:56 PM

exactly! nice feature when you're walking out of the parking lot at nite and you can flip those bad boys on from a distance.

jyupitt 05-10-2005 05:20 PM

3 concerns with this feature:
What if you accidentally hit the remote and leave the rings on?
What if you forget to turn it off after you turn off the lights and car?
How do you know if the rings are on or off when you are inside the vehical especially during the day?

kirkX5m 05-10-2005 05:41 PM

good questions:

1. i've left them on an entire day at work (10-8pm) and came out with no problems...
2. once you walk away from this, you'll KNOW they are on, they are so bright, it's like having your fog lights on
3. oh, tough one, that one is a SOL, i wonder sometimes if mine are on, i usually visually check they are on before i get in the car.

jyupitt 05-10-2005 06:21 PM

Dont get me wrong. I love how they look and probably am getting the mod very soon. 1)Sure leaving them on for a day wont hurt but for me i drive maybe once a week and leaving them on for a week is probably not good for the battery.
2) I dont like to having to ck the front of the car everytime i get out of the car.
3) This is what i dislike the most about the product. however i think dave said that you can wire them to your factory light to turn them on and off... It would be good if the remote has separate on / off button..( does it?)
I also have the day time running light programmed to be on so need to get that turned off.

Kirk actually has the older remote switching system, the newer system has a seperate on/off button. So there is no confusion to whether they are on or off. 99% of our customers go with the remote, and all love it.

joll 05-10-2005 07:59 PM

These special made Angel Eyes for X5 headlight's are really interesting.

I did this mod with Angel Eyes made for E46 headlight's and it look quite similar to the "special" angel eyes in size and color (13,2cm is my angel eyes). The bracket on last 2 pic's is used to mount the Angel Eyes to your reflector in the headlight. But on the low beam I removed the brakcet and mounted the ring with Quick Epoxy that will hold the ring in place (not visible)

Angel Eyes is connected to the parking light and also a 4 ch RF Remote Controller will be mounted soon. It's should also be possible to attach the Angel Eyes to you interior light's and when you unlock your car the angel eyes turn-on and when you lock your car the fade out.
DDE Remote

Cool Angel Eyes

But you should not mess with the headlight's if you don't have some skills, the tools and correct sealing!!!

the angel eyes that i have put in my headlights are slightly bigger than what you are using... the rings are also thinner, brighter and whiter... i'll post some close up pics and night pics... so that you could see... and there are no wires or glue visible... and it doesn't look cheap... :) :)

even your custom headlights doesn't look like an original bmw... and i really don't like the looks.. the signal lights, reflector, etc... i don't like the look of the rings in the high beams... it looks like it was just hanging and there's too much space under.. just giving an honest opinion... :)

So where could one purchase the Is300 angel eyes?

justwaiting 05-11-2005 09:28 PM

I did the angel eye mod on my 2003 M3 with the parts from Uminitza..and I had great customer server and response. During the install I broke one of the rings and he replaced it for no charge. I'm very happy with them and I've had them for over 1.5 years....

Dave,

I am interested in the group buy, but have a question. The OEM angel eyes appear to be two different size rings as the two lamps are different sizes

However, and correct me if I am wrong, your eyes seem to be the same size. Therefore they do not encircle the headlight, but instead sit on top of it...

am I correct?

Our NEW ring design allows for better fit and finish, although they do not fill up the entire high beam, trust me when I say they look fine. We did alot of research and development and chose to use the same size rings because they look better to the eye. Ask anyone on this board with our headlights, and they will give you their honest opinion also.

Anyone besides Joll wish to endorse that viewpoint and post a photo?

OEM Angel Eyes are far inferior in look, light output, color and visibility.

Dave, I am not attacking you, just making sure that I get the best angel eyes for my X. In looking at your gallery photos I do not want the halo to sit in front of the lens like this... http://www.customangeleyes.com/image...ront%20day.jpg
I want it to look OEM stock with the ring encircling the light...

Are the gallery photos older versions of your product? Do you offer rings that encircle the lens? If not, is there an advantage to the way you are doing it?

I agree. The full circle on the X5 looks better than having both angel eyes the same. There are things that can be done to the factory angel eyes to make them brighter. I want to buy a kit, but I am not going to get the kit that does not cover the full round of the light sockets.

I love my OEM angel eyes. The OEMs look graceful and elegant. I do not think they are inferior by any means.

I agree...much better than the too small circle...

The angel eye for the high-beams definitely don't look right IMHO. OEM looks so much better, although less bright.

We can set you up :)

You would need the ProLumen HID kit for your headlights and the Predator Chromium X5 Angel Eyes!
