telescoping steering wheel
I have a 2002 with premium, cold climate.....package.
Can't remember how it goes but when I removed my key from the steering coulmn, does the telescoping steering wheel suppose to retract up & forward or is it just goes up but not forward into it's initial position? Needed to find out how is it suppose to be so I can take to stealer and get it fix or something. |

So in summary, it's only supposed to go "up" now. |
That explains it! I thought I lost my memory (or the X5 lost it's telescoping memory, LOL). Mine only goes up now. Too bad they turn it off cause the sole purpose is to clear the way. (Wish it is similar to Razr V3 so I can do some seem mod myself.)

But you can still set your key memory to do this. It was only the "move wheel when ignition is turned off " feature that was disabled. I set my key memory to retract the wheel when I unlock the door and it still works.

Can I do it myself or do I have to take it to the stealer? How can I set it if I can do it myself?

Go throught the "Seat Memory" programming instructions. (Page 55 in my manual) As part of the positions you set move the wheel up and back, set the door mirrors, adjust the A/C settings and seat position and the radio/audio settings. Press the "M" button on the seat keypad with the key in the "1 or 2" position and then the number button to which your key is linked. That should be it as long as you had the stealer link keys to number buttons.

Zulu, thanks for the info. I already have the seat M button programed. It will do everything (seat, mirror, A/C...) but the fwd (in) on the steering wheel. Want to know more on this from someone else. If my memory serves me right. It used to go fwd & up after I removed my key but now it only goes up.

Wait a second, SG, you should demand to get that function/feature back. I have a 2001 X5 and for the past 5 years and 133,xxx miles, that function has been working flawlessly on the my X5. Yes, there is a setting to disable it, but you can get someone witht the DIS computer to re-enable it. Yes, it is a software setting and yes it can be re-enabled. I have had some custom DIS settings done at the dealer if you know the right person (also at no cost);)
For example, I have it set that the alarm will only be deactivated by the remote control. If someone plays around with lock or even if I open it manually with using the key in the keyhold and open it, the alarm will go off. You can still shut off the alarm with your remote control or put your key in the ignition and turn it to position 2. There are all kinds of settings in the DIS computer. My local mechanic has his own version of it and you can set anything on the BMW....there is a 3 page list of it. |
