Engine Heat...
 I have had multiple cars that get HOT, but is it normal for the amount of heat these engines throw off? It's absolutely INSANE! I can take my 03 cobra out in the 100* weather and drive down the 1/4 mile and it's still not as hot under the hood! It just almost doesn't seem "normal". HOWEVER, I have read threads about hoses getting gooey and what not, so I don't think this is a problem specific to MY x5.
Does anyone do cooling modifications? Something as simple as removing the heat blanket on the hood could release LOTS of the heat under there. Just curious as a new owner... Thanks, Steve |
Hmmm. That's odd. I was actually getting concerned my temp gauge wasn't working cause it's always top dead center. Never noticed any significant build-up of heat, even during a few 6-8 stretches.
I'd assume it's generally warmer here in CA than in PA, so you might want to get that checked out. :goodluck: |

Hmmm... I always thought is was cooler under the hood than I had expected for my X5. It certainly doesn't appear to be abnormal to me. Maybe you should have it looked at...

I have opened my hood after long drives and never found it surprisingly hot- same as X5Jay- cooler than expected. I'd encourage checking into it. My 740 had some issues with heat build-up that didn't show on the gauge, and that ended up being a complete rebuild of the cooling system... $3300 later. Not an experience to be repeated! ;) |
interesting...maybe I am just paranoid now that it's getting warmer out.

It's the residual engine heat building up because:
- you are not moving so the air isn't taking any heat away via radiator - the engine bay is better insulated than most (hood and splash shields below) - the engine bay is so tightly packed that there isn't much convective heat transfer around the engine even with the hood open. It's probably not all that hot in the engine bay when the X5 is moving. |
:iagree:

Both my 03 and my newer 05 4.4's never seemed that hot. I was suprised how cool they were compared to my Audi!

I had some heat build up but i took out the little soft thing underneath the hood itself that i gues its there for noise reduction i took that out and its been cooler now!
