When to replace shocks - ride quality.
 

So my X is a 2001 but has 28,000 miles. I was thinking it rides kind of rough but not sure when the shocks/struts should be replaced or if they wear out over time even with low miles (don't call me stupid, I just don't know these things).

But what is typical life and have others had to replace theirs? What are the signs? I have my 30,000 mile appointment set for late July - could have them look it over but wanted some feedback. Maybe put something aftermarket on. ;)

kewlx5 just replaced his shocks on his '01 but he has over 130k miles... he does report that its much smoother with the new shocks.

your shocks should be fine with your low miles. they don't typically wear out with time, rather only mileage wears them out (being sealed in self-lubricating shock oil). the x5 rides a bit firmer then most cars (bmw's do in general). it be your perception that its rough because you've been driving other softer riding cars?

a typical "shady-tree mechanic's" test for shocks "used to be" that you would bounce on the bumper/corner as hard as you can and count the number of bounces the car does on its own before it stops. if the number is 3 or lower, you are fine. if the number is higher, then its time to replace the shocks.

this test is by no means accurate, but gives a general idea...

Yes, the ride is better with new shocks/struts, but I also had over 130K miles as Hayaku stated. I replaced them because I wanted camber plates for better handling and since I was already removing the struts and keeping the X5, why not replace them.

One thing I would suggest you do is check your tire pressure. Make sure you check them first thing in the AM when they haven't been driven on and set all 4 tires to 32 psi.

My ride is now more controlled with new struts and shocks, but it is still "sports package firm" with a little less body roll (side-to-side & front-to-back). The handling is much more precise and sharp with the front camber plates adding more negative camber!:thumbup:

You should also check your tire pressures. Too much can have a fairly significant effect on ride. Also, what size tires are you running? 20's will ride noticeably stiffer than 18's or even 19's. GL!

My '01 has 53K miles, but I wouldn't
call the ride "rough". It has sport pkg
suspension and, if anything, it has
softened up quite a bit over the 4 1/2
yrs and miles.

I have no plans for new shocks anytime soon.

Hmmm, well I came from a Passat W8 that had 17's on it...and that was pretty isolated from the road. I miss that engine tho...

I have 18's on it now, when I got it it had the stock 17's and the tire change improved the ride a lot. We have a 2000 323 and I'm accustomed to the firmness of the ride of that car.

I really didn't know what to expect when I got this as I'd not driven one before (bought it with pics from a stealer in NJ). I'll check the tire pressures because I haven't since they were put on about a month ago so I have no clue what they are set at. Good feedback! Thanks!
