What about P 0505 code?
 
It seems noone has ever had this problem before? The SES light continue to bug the heck out of me.

I believe the P0505 code has to do with the Idle Control System Malfunction, can't exactly remember if it does (I've had plenty of codes before). I believe it is due to either the 02 sensor or the ICV. Are you have engine stalling troubles, or rough idle. I do remember seeing this code as I was having rough idle due to some bad timing in my tune, but it went away once we fixed the timing issue. How many miles/km are on your x5. If it is high you may just requrie a simple idle control valve cleaning. Another possibility is poor emissions. (I forgot what # that code is, it could be P0505.)

Thanks ESS4.6is. Based on the OBD II book it is Idle Control system malfunction. One of my friends had to replace the secondary air pump in his 01 X5 3.0, and the code is gone. I had both P0365 and P0505. I changed the exhaust sensors, and now I have to tune in for the P0505 code. Mine is 01 X5 3.0 67,700 miles, and it has no problems at all. I mean no problems at all except the SES light is on and it is bugging me. I asked the forum about how to DIY O2 sensors but get no response yet. I may have to look into how to do the ICV too.

Well most go to the dealer when there is a SES light on, the dealer uses their diagnostic tools to read what the codes are and diagnose and fix the problem accordingly. But since I modify a lot of my vehicles I bought I have a diagnostic program that is on my laptop, with a connector cable to the diagnostic port. Thus I can read the acutal codes and then use the manual to find out what the codes are. If you just want a simple handheld Actron OBD 2 Auto Scanner is decent, or you can go to Autozone and they will read your codes for you. But if you are in warranty, which I believe you are just hand all problems over to the dealer. My warranty is voided on all drivetrain components due to my "enhancements", so I prefer to see what the problem is first before deciding, whether to bring it to the dealer.

Well I would try simply cleaning the ICV first, since you have the O2 sensors changed, I would try reflashing after the cleaing to see if it goes away. Since the idle isn't rough and there is no stalling I do not think you have the secondary air pump problem, but it is a possibility.

As for changing the cat O2 it is pretty simple, the setup is likely different on the 3.0, but basically put the x5 on ramps and find the sensor module (should be a black box), which should be near the driver side door. Unscrew the module from the frame and disconnect the wire that goes to the pre-catalytic converter oxygen sensor. Using the wrench disconnect the seat of the O2 sensor and it should unscrew. Replace with the O2 sensor and tighten with the wrench. Reconnect the new O2 sensor to the vehicle wiring harness. Snap the connectors back into the sensor module and reattach the module. Reflash and check SES lights.

do you know where to look for ICV in 3.0? I search the ETK and could not found ICV or secondary air pump. I only found air pump in exhaust manifold. Is there another name for these parts?
By the way, I changed the exhaust sensor when I saw the code P0365 camshaft position sensor bank 1 circuit malfunction, and you said I changed O2 sensor. Did I misgiving information or they are the same. I have no ideas where to look for O2 sensors until now you tell me where to look for cat O2 sensors.

I'm not I get what your saying exactly. So you have changed the O2 sensors in the cats right? If not its pretty easy and just follow what I said above. If you have more trouble on with the cat O2 sensor I can take a picture to help you. Also did you change the camshaft position sensor?

Now assuming that your O2 sensors are good, and your ICV is clean, it is likely due to the vacuum hose somewhere. I'm sorry I'm not exactly sure where the secondary air pump is to the ICV on the 3.0 is, but the main one to the exhaust manifold is working fine since you have no idling issues. Try to look for a smaller black 0.5" diameter hose attaching to ICV. It is possible that it somehow got discconnected and never reconnected causing the SES light to show up. I'm not familiar with the 3.0i engine so feel around the ICV for a hose outlet.

I would not fuss with your O2 Sensors, O2 related faults generally are in the P01xx group. P05xx in idle speed and auxiliary inputes. Check the vent valve /pressure regulator valve 11 61 7 501 566, common for that to cause a P05xx fault, and it's not a huge investment if your going to start to throw parts at the problem.

Hi, can you spray the ICV (to clean it) from the hose coming from the MAF?

Confused on on Idle Control Valve
 
I see in parts list a picture of the ICV and it looks different from the replacement pictures posted back in '06. The bosch replacement part # W0133-1605127 does don't look the same. The one in the picture from X5World and the one my machainc shown me had a type of "butterfly valve" what am I missing?
