My new x5 is coming with a Casette Deck ? What!

This is a bad joke! The m3 has the nav with a single cd behind it but the x5 doesn't ?

The x5's:

As wonderful as BMW's are, with regard to performance and handling, their electronics leave much to be desired.

benathon 04-21-2006 11:55 AM

BMW is far behind in electronics compared to Acura, Infiniti and Lexus to name a few.

SNIFFLES 04-21-2006 11:56 AM

I know but why does the m3 get the same nav system radio but with a single cd behind it? Total BS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:(:(

at4689 04-21-2006 11:56 AM

yeah.. i agree!!!!^

benathon 04-21-2006 12:07 PM

They mentioned something about space. However one of the members here said that there is just the same amount of space back there.

I can only assume that BMW feels like the younger segments of the population who own lots of CD's buy the M3 and old stodgy guys with lots of disco cassettes buy the X5. Just kidding. Why they still contract to have units made with a cassette is beyond me. Probably the German equivalent of some kind of sweetheart contact deal with the supplier of the decks who is a long time BMW family friend or relative.

Who you telling. Add on Bluetooth tech to that is a + these day, where the update accessory to all the latest phone...

LeMansX5 04-21-2006 01:01 PM

The german auto makers are little slow when it comes to electronics. I have a in-dash 6 disc changer which plays MP3s burnt on DVD+R discs with tags, DVD audio, dts and 5.1 channel surround sound in my CEOs new Acura RL which I can control with my voice commands. But it does not drive like my 4.8. trade-offs :tsk:

Nah, more so they want to sell you their 6 disc cd changer....why get for free what they can make you pay for.

crosvs 04-21-2006 01:21 PM

:iagree: MOST german electronics lag behind the japanese :(

and i know this is going to sound like a really dorky comment lol but ... doesn't the new onboard computer interface, with the blue colored corner decorative elements kinda remind you of the computer panels on picard and co's enterprise on star trek? :D

Its shaped differently and would not fit /align.

NOC 04-21-2006 02:59 PM

Does it have a bigger screen??

Eric5273 04-21-2006 04:37 PM

This is the main reason I am not getting the Nav when I order my X5. I can't imagine not having an in-dash CD in my car.

motordavid 04-21-2006 05:36 PM

The '07 will prob. have Nav w/CD and the
mkt'ng geniuses will be jumping up and down
like it's the coolest new thing on the planet.

My 12 yr old Gold Wing has a cassette player, too.

Quicksilver 04-21-2006 08:03 PM

I agree that BMW tech is a little behind but i still haven't bothered to transfer the music I have on cassette to CD so in at least this case it's a good thing for now. Hey i still have an 8 track player/recorder in storage that is still in working order.

asawadude 04-21-2006 11:43 PM

Get an iPod and an iceLink. The CD or lack of CD issue becomes a moot point. I haven't used the CD player since installing mine.

:iagree: Same here. It won't be too long before the "why is there a cassette player?" becomes "why is there a CD player?" ;)

mb23 04-22-2006 03:02 PM

no biggie for me especially since im hearing the new changer is mp3 compatable and also goin for an icelink so no need for in dash just my opinion....

Quicksilver 04-22-2006 06:28 PM

After the CD player what's next??? Ice link? If one is going to confine himself to nothing but MP3's then I guess thats ok. I suppose that assumes that generally speaking people cannot hear the difference between MP3's and 24bit CD. One could argue that before you lock yourself out completely listen to the other options before making a choice.

btrvalik 04-24-2006 08:03 AM

Icelink does not confine you to MP3s.. in fact my icelink has never played an MP3. At home I only listen to uncompressed music. In an automotive environment I find it impossible telling the difference between high bit rate AAC (196 +) and CDs. If compression is still a problem for someone can always use a lossless codec such as apple lossless, etc

swingkat420 04-24-2006 10:53 AM

Maybe we'll see a built-in iPod-style into the system, where it has a wifi so you can upload/download your music into your car.

Then...who knows Internet, software upgrades for Nav/Ecu/etc, downloaded automatically when they get released....

:)

I think you should hold out for the 8-Track...

EOD Guy 01-12-2009 11:21 PM

I believe a member here had pulled his car interior apart when he retrofitted the nav and according to him there is enough room to accommodate a disc drive.

bigfish 01-12-2009 11:44 PM

be happy your not getting a...........

Isn't that stupid...... You should be thankful that your not getting an 8-track or a reel to reel deck...........

EOD Guy 01-13-2009 07:33 AM

Todd....... chill...... I think he was being funny..... least I thought so... lol

bigfish 01-13-2009 01:17 PM

Todd B

EOD Guy 01-13-2009 07:39 PM

It's all good, aplo's

bigfish 01-13-2009 07:53 PM

All things being equal, I wouldn't mind.........

No worries, all things being equal I wouldn't have minded having one of the instant food ports from "Star Trek"....... All you would have to say is.... Tea, hot, earl gray and the Nav screen floods down and a cup of tea piping hot appears!

I'm just saying........

The cassette player came in handy. Recently my cd changer jammed and the magazine won't come out, so I bought a cassette ipod adapter for the time being ($9) and it actually sounds pretty good. I will either be replacing the cd changer or getting an intravee
