Newbie questions

Hey gang, this is really a great forum. Good job.

Sorry for the avatar in advance

Just a quick few questions.

- thinking of installing the brushed aluminum running boards on a 2005 4.4i SP. Dealer has quoted me $1,000 with install. Can anyone recommend a better deal in nyc area.

- thinking of replacing the titanium-color front bumper grill insert that comes with SP, it is pretty cheap, dull, and plastic looking IMO. That would not be the same as the "titanium grille" that is offered in the accessories catalog, would it?

BTW, I am too experiencing similar problems with the x5 that you guys have mentioned earlier (i.e rough idling, trans. lurching). I am kinda hesitant to take it to my current dealer for many diff reasons. Does anyone have positive feedbacks from the dealers in nyc, li areas?

thanks for the info, greatly appreciated

...John

if stealerships aren't for you, you could always try independent bmw shops. One of the more popular one's is "The Little Garage". They have two locations: in Woodside, Queens (718-446-3670) and Hungtington, Long Island (631-673-1000).

I dont know if you have the space, since you're in NYC, but the installation of the running boards wasn't hard. If you have a driveway (you obviously don't if you're in Manhattan) or a friend that will let you use theirs you could do it. I'm 16 and I don't know my ass from my elbow when it comes to technical things like that, and I did it with two friends. If you do, order extra rivets, buy a plastic rivet gun, and make sure you have the correct parts... Those are the three problems I hit. Not enough rivets, two left-side parts for the plastic under the boards, and didn't get the right rivet gun. Anyway, that's my story.
Good Luck with your X, and get to the mods!

I think the running boards itself cost $725 list and you can get them for around $550 from Crevier or Pacificbmw. Check the DIY http://www.xoutpost.com/articles.php?...icle&artid=185

Bought my boards on eBay for $500. Shipping was $70. Rivet gun and plastic rivets ran me $30. The 2 beers I drank over the hour and a half it took to install them myself cost about $5. :D
