My 10.5psi 4.6is
Well guys, I got the new 2.85" pulley put on on my x5 and got a new belt to go with it. The shop spent a lot of time trying to make the tune perfect for this extra boost and the larger injectors. We started out making about 7.5 psi with a lot belt slip and some KR readings and detonation issues. It took a good 3 days of solid tuning to eliminate all the KR and once we got the new belt on we were 10.5psi of boost. I was actually very surprised at getting 10.5psi out of the 2.85 pulley, I was expecting more around 9psi. Anyways I finally drove it home tonight and boy does it pull hard, it sound like a jet at WOT. The launch is hard too. I'm very pleased with the boost, now if only I can find a good header for the 4.6. I took some pictures in the garage as it is dark here, but I will take some more tomorrow and hopefully grab a video.

Sounds real mean. Do you think you can get us a video of some 0to60 runs

Wow...talk about a beast!

Awesome. How did they drop the compression? Is there an intercooler? Looks like it goes right into the intake manifold.

how much HP?

ESS4.6is - Give us some more info on your SC. Is it a recent install? How many miles have you put on it? Who did the install? Any other work done (i.e. engine and tranny software, brakes, etc.). Any change to gas mileage? Sorry to ask all the questions, but you're the only guy on here running the ESS kit.

That is baaaadass! Very nice, man. No FMU or ecu reflash can replace good tuning! Nice to see someone doing it with this kind of setup. I'm sure a track video would be welcomed by all.
On another note, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to run heavier weight driveline fluids as I'm sure you're straining it a lot more now. |

The install was not recent I had it done in 2003 with about 3000km on my 4.6is. It was a standard ESS kit wiht 6psi of boost (full details on the stock kit is at esstuning.com) I drove it until 30,000km with minimal problems. I did have some O2 sensor issues and failing injectors that seemed most prevalent with cold weather. I was pretty content with the power until about 6 months ago when one of friends got a cayenne turbo S and another friend got a trailbazer SS with a supercharger. I could not stay with them at all. So I went to a performance shop and we firstly went with larger injectors, had some porting work done and forged parts installed as well as a custom cam to lower the compression ratio. The pulley was then changed about 4 days ago and a new 6 rib belt was installed to prevent slippage. Tuning for the beast was a lot of work, as my mechanic spent 3 days straight perfecting it. Transmission has different fluid in it, some servos but basically stock. Brakes are stock (for now). As for gas milage, with the ESS kit I was seeing about 11mpg, which is quite bad. So far with this new tune and increased boost I am seeing around the same at 11mpg. |
