2600 miles in 5 days in my 4.8is...
 

1st long drive in the X5....WHAT A FREAKING AWESOME CAR FOR A ROAD TRIP!!!!!!!

San Diego to Boise Idaho and back with a trip up to McCall, 2 rounds of golf and a few meetings all in under 5 days....

4.8 is unreal at high speeds....at 110 it feels like 55 and comfort seats were awesome for driving and sleeping while friend drove. At high speeds with Yakima box on top of car was a non factor...did not even know it was up there.....

Gas mileage at ave. of 90 mph was 16 and at 70 was about 21....for long flat stretches. Gas is 60 cents cheaper in Idaho (super 93 octane instead of 91 in California)

Sat. radio was great even though pod on top cut out recption a bit here and there

Gonna have fun getting bugs off and cleaning it up.....Love this car and had a great time !!!

Kinda wishing I had a silve one though after seeing how fast black gets dusty up in Idaho!

Great trip! X5's and BMW's in general are fantastic highway cars and your trip reminds us why we love them. A trip that long would be tiring in many vehicles, but for a BMW it's an adventure.

It sure is excellent ride for highway driving. I did almost 1600 miles in 2 days last weekend. Does feel smooth and comfy even at 100mph+.:thumbup: I was so much into enjoying the ride that I missed my exit for home when the journey came to end. :D

i should probably post a new thread about this, but out of curiosity -- i know many of you may laugh at me for this but -- am i the only one who's actually scared to exceed 100 mph for legal reasons?

my understanding is that at least in california, if you are caught doing 100+ you WILL receive a reckless driving (felony) ticket and either (a) go to jail; (b) have your car impounded; and/or (c) be left stranded on the side of the road.

as a law student, i simply cannot risk this and as a result, i'll hit 99 now and then but necessarily NEVER EVER do 100+ as frustrating as it may be ... even driving from socal to norcal on the 5 in the middle of the night where, as you mentioned, because the X5 is such a capable and safe high-speed cruiser, i'd love to comfortably cruise at around at LEAST 100, if not up to 110, 115.

Driving the 5, at 2AM, on a weeknight, keeping the speeds around 80-85 -- that really IS torture lol

I drove my '01 X5 4.4i sport from L.A. to Long Island with my father. It was an absolutley comfortable and enjoyable ride... I highly recommend taking a road trip in an X, you won't be sorry.

No legal xpert, but here in far western NC, the Staties will drag you off to jail for 100 mph, with tix for reckless driving and reckless endangerment.

Car or M'cycle will be impounded, one will sit in the lock up until theCEO shows up with bail, etc. Not a good deal. That 100 is not the magic mark here, as some Staties will do the above at 30 over in a 60 or 65.

I get to 100+ on very short spurts in the Vette or on a sled...but, in very deserted stretches of road and I'm holding my fookin breath when I do.
Risky biz, cop-wise.

I am worried as well....but sometimes out in the middle of Idaho you got to say what the frick!!!

I woke up a coulpe of times in the passenger seat when my father was driving to see him doing about 120mph in Oklahoma :) I don't think I've ever seen a bigger smile on his face :)

What was your travel path into Idaho? Up the I15 through Salt Lake?
