Curios, are the metalic Running Boards hard to install as a DIY project on my wife's X5 3.0i White Bimmer?

You can find this DIY link on the X5World home page. Many threads on this as well if you do a search on the forum. Whether it's a hard or easy install depends on the individual. I'd say it's a 2 out 5 on the difficulty scale for do-it-yourselfers.
