New Windshield
I have a 03 4.6is that has a few annoying rock chips on my windshield that are right in the drivers view.Has anyone replaced there windshield? Please give me an idea of cost and are there any repercussions from doing this such as excess wind noise or is it as good as new.Any negatives to worry about? Thanks!

Check with your insurance for "Glass Coverage" as they may cover the cost. You could also look into going for the "Comfort Glass" if you are replacing the glass. Previous posts claimed it was only $40 more out of pocket.

if they are not to bad you can get fixed, i have a bullseye on the ferrari and had it fixed for $150 looked brand new.
|
How big are the chips? If they are smaller than a quarter, they can be fixed easily without changing out the entire windshield.
At the DC meet, JV hooked me up with this vendor who fixed 2 I had for less than $80. http://chipdoctor.homestead.com/ I'm sure there are local companies that do the same. |
The chips are not that big; they are like bubbles even though they are chips. They bug the shit out of me because they are right in the drivers view ;especially in sunlight.

I don't know about your insurance for replacement but I know that mine has a deductible that is probably a little more than the cost of a windshield so you'd probably be paying this whole amount out of pocket.
As far as windshield replacement tips, it is advisable to leave the vehicle for 24 hours after the new windshield goes in to prevent any gaps in the adhesive and thus, wind noise. |
I had a replacement OEM windshield installed and it is just fine. I let my vehicle sit overnight before driving.

In Oz a new screen is AU$400!!!!, thank god I ticked the replacement windscreen option when I insured it.

Just had my windshield replaced with comfort glass at the stealer: just over $1000!
They keep it for 2 days to cure the seal with heat, my insurance paid for it minus a $500 deductable. Have to get the 330ci screen replaced next week, hope the insurance doesnt flip out with the similar claim so soon after......fucking big-rigs throwing rocks.....happened to me a few times on bay area roads..... Comfort glass is nice though....be sure to ask for COMFORT Glass NOt Climate Comfort, thats a different deal. Good luck..... |
Florida has a state law that mandates windshield replacement under insurance, with no deductible. In other words, insurance pays 100% of the cost, with no out of pocket costs to the insured. Of course, I am sure they make up the difference by increased premiums.
Still, it is nice to be able to insist on OEM glass. Had to have the wife's MB windshield replaced twice within a month, and never heard a complaint from insurance. |
Is this Comfort glass an aftermarket product or OEM part? I live in AZ and want to replace my windshield with Comfort windshield but not sure where to get them replaced. Thanks.

this is from an article on AOL:
Use OE-approved glass. if you must replace the windshield, it's of utmost importance that you request the use of original-equipment quality glass. Many glass shops now offer budget-priced glass made in China that does not necessarily have the strength of the original windshield. |
The comfort glass IS an OEM glass. The X5 needs to be done with a special heat process and the shop needs the car for 2 days. I would never trust a glas shop with this. I found a local dealer with in-house glass guys trained to do BMWs specifically. The Comfort glass is not much more in $$$.
I went with extra $$ the dealer charges for peace of mind.....if THEY screw it up, then they must fix it. |
What is the comfort glass?
What is the comfort glass and how is it different than the one that came with the car? Also I had some chips fixed prior and they mentioned that you never want to replace factory glass since the installer can never replicate the seal that came from the factory. Thus you will have issues down the road with the seals. Any truth to this?

I just had my 03 4.6 windshield replaced, see my tread, $150.00 everything identical, see my tread

Found my answer to the comfort glass (http://www.xoutpost.com/articles/x5/b...tallation.html). But still had the question regarding factory seal vs dealer seal.
|
why do you want us to check your tires?;)

So do I understand you correctly, it cost 1K for a windshield replacement? Comfort glass is 375.00 List price, making the labor 625.00 for a windshield R&R. I paid 180.00 for a safelite replacement with a 100.00 deductible, my net out of pocket was 80 bucks and I have a DOT approved tinted windshield. They came to by work and did it in less than an hour. Guaranteed for the life of the car.
Might want to shop that price, it seems more than a little high, even at Dealer prices. |

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...94&hg=51&fg=05 I have the rain sensor and want the factory "tinted" windshield with the "shade bands". Is 51317064863 the one that I want? That was the part number from the Comfort Windshield article in the Articles section. Does the windshield really look as purple as it does in the picture in the Articles section? Fot those of you who have it ... do you like it??? I will be contacting my insurance and going to BMW tomorrow. |

I have had 2 Climate Comfort screen changed in two years at a cost of £765 ($1400 US) each time. The screen is about £365 ($730). Insurance deductible was £60 each time.
Stealer costs here are now over £120 ($240) per hour here and they kept the car for 24 hours. The first change was done by the insurer arranged repairer who fitted their version made by Pilkingtons, but it had the wrong shaped rain sensor block on the screen itself. Having expressed my disgust to the insurers they allowed me to have BMW redo the job and fit and OEM screen. It then transpired that if I had gone with a non-OEM screen there would have been warranty issues with any equipment mounted around the screen and also the paint warranty. Second replacement was done by BMW as I agreed with the insurer that for warranty purposes it had to be an OEM screen. Word to the wise - if it's under warranty get an OEM screen and get BMW to fit it. |
Earning The Title $tealership!!!!
So... BMW quoted me $533 in parts (regular windshield) and, (ready for this?) $838 in labor. (6.5 hrs at $129 per hr) I asked if they outsourced the work and was told they did it themselves. Oh, when I told them I wanted the Comfort Glass I was told it would not work because my X5 did not have the wiring  to hook up the Comfort Glass. (Scary what they do not know, thank you X5 World!!) I got a px quote of $545 for the Comfort Glass as opposed to $400 for the stock glass.......
When I contact Gieco they tell me there is no deductible but they will only cover $160 for the labor. So I call Alpha Auto Glass in Ft Lauderdale. First off they tell me they do all of the installations for Lauderdale BMW. They often do work with Gieco. I arranged to have them get the OEM Comfort Glass through BMW and my labor will be completely covered. So, Lauderdale BMW wanted to charge an extra $678 just cause they can and the same guys would have been doing the work. Amazing..... The grand total will cost Gieco around $700 as opposed to $1,400.... wow |
