All 4.4i has rear self-leveling air springs which can vary the rear ride height. Have someone check it out, but chances are it was just a fluke. However, if you do get a warning light, get it checked. Maybe you have leak in the rear air springs.
You are correct that in the model year 2000, there is no ride-height adjustment, but all 4.4i come with rear air springs.
