Retrofit removable towing hitch
I just bought a 2001 X5 4.4 and it has a threaded adapter on the tow hitch that looks like you can screw a tow tongue on. I have searched the web but can not find any detail on where to buy and specifications. Can someone please give me more detail.
TY  |
definitely not oem.. got pics? how does it screw on?

I do not have a picture on hand..will take one later today.
If you remove the plastic hitch cover on the rear bumper, you can see a tow hitch assembly installed. The major difference is that instead of a 2" square reciever, there is a threaded hole about 3/4" dia. |
definitely not rated to tow 6,000 lbs... if you have any real towing needs (other then bike rack), get rid of that hitch and put in something with the standard 2" square receiver (we recommend the super beefy oem hitch)

The threaded hole is for the tow hook. Look in the tool kit (in the spare tire bay) and you will find a tow hook (actually, it is a tow ring??) that screws in that hole. It is definitely NOT for a hitch, but rather for a tow truck to load your vehicle on a trailer, or to get you unstuck...
