Battery Died: Service Engine Light On
I was in the car for about 30 minutes and during this time I turned on the AC without the car being on.
The battery died. I didn't expect it to die after only 30 minutes but it did. Now I have a service engine light on. I drove aroundd 20 miles but it is still on. 1) Does it sound normal for the battery to die after 30 minutes of leaving the AC on without the car being on? 2) Is my service engine light going to go out or do I need to take it in to the dealer? |
What made you think you could run the a/c for 30 minutes on the battery alone? Actually your battery did pretty good, my wife did the same thing and killed our battery in 20 minutes. Had to jump start it and drove it for about an hour. You might want to take it in to see why the service engine light is on. Maybe the battery is damaged and won't recharge correctly anymore.

Why would one run their A/C for half an hour with the car off?
30 mins of full tilt boogie elec. drain on a new batt. is tough... on your '01, which may have the orig. batt., is out of the question, imo. GL,md |
I was having a lil too much fun in the car and wasn't really paying attention. :-P
The good news is I have 3 weeks to replace anything on the car if there is a problem. I bought the car from Carmax and that is their policy (one month after purchase full warranty on all parts). |

yea, something like that happened to me and my engine light was on. it was ironically the day after bmw replaced my battery, my engine light went on and they told me id be fine, i was driving and the x just died, they came to flatebed it, wasnt fun.
so watch it... |
wow that sucks. I didnt expect damage to be done to my battery by it dying just once.
Happened to me on previous cars numerous times and I just jump started it and they lasted years after. |
Guys the A/C doesn't run unless the engine is running ..! DOH ! hahaha
X5's suck up a lot of juice. Our died once after having the seat warmers on for 20 minutes (it was 4 months old at the time). The dealer said it was normal, and that X5's are all very power hungry. When they work on them in the shop apparently they use the charging devices often... or so I am told... |
The AC does run without the motor on. DOH!!
