4.4i transmission hesitation question

While discussing my new order with my sales rep, he told me that some 4.4i owners complain of a bit of tranny hesitation on initial acceleration. He gave me an '06 to test and I felt it myself. It seemed to be less noticeable in Sport mode, however.

Can anyone explain why this occurs and how any of you have dealt with the issue?

Thanks for any light you can shed on this for me.

I asked the same question about a month ago and rec'd no answer, or guesses. There is definitely a hesitation when you stomp on the gas from a standing start. The 6-spd tranny does get good mileage. Maybe it is setup not to throw away so much gas in 1st & 2nd gear. Maybe a Dinan upgrade will cure it? I definitely makes my heart also stutter when jumping out into traffic.

If your X has this problem, you need to take it to the dealer to have a new tranny software update. They are aware of this problem now and the update cures it in most cases. It is not normal and IMO, it's downright dangerous...

BTW - Dinan doesn't have tranny or engine software yet for the 04's. I've been hearing that it's coming for a looooong time now but haven't seen anything from them yet.

I also said in an earlier post about dads 06 4.4 and it always wants to be in such a low gear. Will they have a tranny update for the new 2006s?

First time in a forum so hope I'm doing this right... I just got an 06 X5 4.4 yesterday and immediatly noticed the hesitation. Had been driving a 3.0 as a loaner and did not notice it and made the 3.0 seem more responsive with initial acceleration. So I should go back to the dealer for a software update?? PS THis car just came off the production line I think.

Yes - definitely take it back to the dealer for reprogramming.

The tranny software update has been out for a while. You would think new vehicles from the factory would already have the latest software.

Great point, but I believe there are many cases of 2006 X5s that have this problem and would benefit from the update. Good question for the dealer perhaps, but I doubt they'd be able to answer it...;)

Well it wouldn't surprise me if the old update needed a new update. Yes, I'm in the software biz.
