What year is it? My 2003 4.4 used to do the same thing and no problem. My 996 did it too, but my exhaust was modded so I was not sure.

I was about to post the same question. I have a 2003 4.4i x5 that is making the same startup noise. My oil level is fine and the engine has been doing this intermittently for sometime. I don't think that the starter motor is the cause since the sound takes place after the motor disengages. I think it might be related to the timing chain or a lack of oil at startup. I have the BMW service program on CD and found an article regarding the X5 4.4i engine making a rattling noise at startup. It lists the cause as a gap at the lifters and lack of oil at startup. The BMW article says that this is a characteristic of the engine and there is no cause for concern since damage will not occur.

Ok, BMW says no damage, but how about wear!!! The fact engine is running withouth oil for a few seconds, might not cause imediate damage but after some years of this occuring it might wear some parts, just my 0.2cents

I agree with your conclusion, but if it really is a characteristic of the engine i dont know what can be done to help it. Maybe an engine oil adtive like Prolong or something. I don't know if this would be safe in a BMW with the synthtic oil. Any ideas?

My 2000 X5 4.4 does the same thing at cold startup. It could be the main bearing caps having lack of oil. May never affect the engine but who knows. BMW has been worthless in trying to determine the cause. Perhaps thats becuase the 4.4 engine is $10,000 dollars.
